Nothing wrong in fielding Venkaiah for RS polls: BJP

Bengaluru, May 26 (DHNS): The state BJP might have not yet taken a final decision on fielding Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu as a candidate for the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka. But it finds nothing wrong in fielding him, as it feels Karnataka would benefit from him.

Reacting to the ongoing criticism against fielding a non-Kannadiga such as Naidu as the RS candidate from Karnataka, BJP MLA C T Ravi on Wednesday said the BJP was yet to take a decision on the candidates. “Having said this, there is nothing wrong in considering Naidu, especially given his proximity and access to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Karnataka will only benifit from him. If we let go of him, then the state will stand to lose. People should stop getting emotional over this matter,” he added.

Naidu, hailing from Andhra Pradesh, has been elected to RS from Karnataka thrice. However, Kannada activists and the twitterati have been venting their ire at the BJP for attempting to push his for candidature from Karnataka yet again.

JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy has said his party would support only a Kannadiga to enter the RS.

Responding to a question about the ongoing debate on electing non-Kannadigas, Kumaraswamy said he had approached Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murthy, because she is a Kannadiga.

“Two months ago I approached Infosys co-founder Narayan Murthy and asked him about Sudha Murty contestiong. Murthy said Infosys Foundation had a policy not to associate itself with political parties. I even said she should contest as an Independent.”

He said the JD(S) had over time built a reputation that it only supported ‘moneybags’ during RS polls. “There is constant talk of exchange of money during RS elections. I want to set right the matter once and for all. Hence I approached Murthy,” he added.

No other person had that revelation so he will be kept in high demand for the party.

His contribution for the development of Karnataka is zero. The BJP which preaches to other political parties on fielding localities is bringing in a person from Andhra. Are there not efficient and competent persons in Karnataka?

    Lexy,

All the Karnataka political parties should elect prominent personalities like Mohandas Pai, Narayan Murthy, Azim Premji, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Santosh Hegde to Rajya Sabha seat. Some of these may not claim Salary & other benefits like Vijaya Mallya, who every month claimed Rs.70,000/- being a Rajya Sabha MP.

For the last two terms, the man has done nothing for the betterment of Karnataka. It is only fools can nominate him for the third time as if Karnataka does not have a person who is dedicated for the cause of Karnataka. Which century are we living in?? Can't the people in power think even such a basic necessity of nominating a person of Karnataka origin??? Are we so dumb fools to import peoples from other states?? If Swamy can think Rajan is not a 100% Indian, although he is an Indian, why should Karnataka nominate an actual outsider from Karnataka as states representative in the Rajya Sabha? Jaisi Karni, vaise bharni.

He may be close to Modi or Amit or even RSS. But his greatest contribution was the loss of NDA in 2004 General elections when he was the National president of BJP.

It is a shame that political parties are fielding candidates belonging to other states, for the RS polls.

In any case, they should be given a chance only in following cases:

-There are no suitable local candidates available.

-The candidate should be an outstanding personality and in a position to add high value to the constituency to which he would be elected (i.e. getting huge projects/grants sanctioned for his constituency from the Central Govt.

-He should learn the local language and be able to effortlessly/harmoniously mingle with people of his (adopted) constituency and earn their affection/respect.

-At any cost, no 'outside person' should be imposed on the constituency against the feelings of the local party functionaries and electorate.
