Bangalore: BJP-JDS Combine Parades MLAs before Karnataka Governor

Bangalore, Oct 29: Stepping up pressure, the BJP-JDS combine on Monday paraded 126 MLAs, 13 more than the half way mark in the Karnataka assembly, before Governor Rameshwar Thakur to strengthen their claim for government formation after electing B S Yeddyurappa as leader of the joint legislature party.

A rebellion threatened by senior JDS leader M P Prakash fizzled out with six of his supporters deserting but the former Home Minister stood his ground and met the Governor pleading with him not to allow this combine to form the government because it is "illegal and unethical".

"A total of 126 MLAs - 80 from BJP and 46 from JDS attended the joint legislature party meeting and unanimously elected Yeddyurappa (of BJP) as its leader," State unit BJP president D V Sadananda Gowda told reporters, urging Thakur to facilitate government formation.

On a day of swift developments,the BJP and JDS furnished sworn affidavits from MLAs pledging support to government formation to strengthen the coalition's claim.

Prakash, a respected leader of JDS, told Thakur that "the new alliance of BJP-JDS is illegal, unethical and not in accordance with law and public interest".

A split in the JDS may occur as the former Prime Minister H D Devegowda-led outfit could drum up support from only 40 legislators out of its effective strength of 58.

The JDS managed to rope in three MLAs from JDU -- Nagamani, H Anjaneya, Bhimappa Sarikar and three independents -- Balaraj, Narasimha Naik and Srinivas -- to end up with a tally of 46.

Six MLAs -- Veerabasanth Reddy, B C Patil, Rajudgowda, Sharanabasappa Darshanapur, M Y Patil and Vishwanth Patil Hebbal, who had identified with the Prakash camp opposing the JDS re-union with BJP -- attended the joint legislature party meeting.

The lone consolation for Prakash, who is determined to oppose Gowda's diktat, was that the eight MLAs, who have identified with the former deputy chief minister Siddaramaiah, continued to support him.

Prakash, who is still hopeful of a tie-up with the Congress even as that party made a forceful demand for dissolution of the state assembly, rejected an offer of truce from former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy.

On a day of hectic developments, a delegation of BJP and JDS leaders met the Governor and requested him to forward a recommendation to the Centre to revoke President's rule and pave way for formation of the combine's government which enjoyed majority and was in a position to give a stable government.

Sadananda Gowda said both the parties have appealed to the governor to request prime minister Manmohan Singh to convene a meeting of the union cabinet and pass appropriate resolution so that president Pratibha Patil can take necessary action to withdraw proclamation issued under Article 356.

Kumaraswamy, apprehending a split in the party, had ferried MLAs supporting him to resorts on the city outskirts. He brought them to the city to attend the Joint Legislature party meeting, on Monday.

After the legislature party meet, the BJP and JDS MLAs left in buses for Raj Bhavan and presented themselves before the governor.
