Ghastly serial accident at Arkula - 5 dead, 3 critically injured

Mangaluru, Jun 11: In a macabre accident which happened at Arkula near Valachil on national highway 75 near here on Friday June 10, five persons lost their lives. Two others survived with critical injuries.

The accident occurred when the truck jumped over the divider, continued to move on the wrong lane, and hit a car and an auto rickshaw which were approaching the spot at that time.

Muhammed Unais (20), resident of Adyar Berpugudde, Sinan Maripalla (16), from Padi in Pudu village in Bantwal taluk, Muhammed Nazeer (24) from Sajipamunnur village, Ahmed Hussain (32) from Harekala Shantinagara and Muhammed Salam (24) from Nandavar were the unfortunate victims of this accident.

Shaukat Ali (20) and Taushit, both from Nandavar, who suffered grievous injuries, are battling for their lives in hospital. Their condition if stated to be precarious.

The accident occurred on Thursday evening. While the truck was moving towards the city from the direction of B C Road, the car and auto rickshaw were on their way towards Farangipet from the direction of Adyar. The driver lost control over his container truck, which was moving at considerable speed, after the vehicle crossed Yashaswi Hall and was moving in front of Vaibhava Hall. The truck suddenly swerved to the right, scaled the road divider, reached the opposite lane and continued to move on it. It came to stop after hitting a Maruti 800 car and an auto rickshaw. A pedestrian was one among the persons who lost lives in this accident.

While the car turned into a mass of mangled steel in the accident, the auto rickshaw was found to have been stuck under the truck. Those in the three-wheeler were stuck inside the vehicle in this position for about 25 minutes before the locals summoned two JCBs and lifted the container and rescued them. The truck pushed the three wheeler for about 50 feet and crossed the storm drain before coming to a stop near a hillock.

Injured persons were rushed to hospital in an ambulance and the police interceptor vehicle. The traffic on national highway came to standstill and some semblance of order to it was restored after about an hour when police came and took steps to remove obstacles.

City police commissioner, M Chandra Sekhar, deputy police commissioners, Shantharaju and Dr Sanjeev Patil, traffic assistant commissioner of police, Uday Nayak, and other police personnel visited the spot and guided operations. Health minister, U T Khader, called medical officers of Wenlock Hospital and issued directions about postmortem.

A case about the accident was registered in the rural police station here. Driver of the container truck had fled immediately after the accident. Investigation is on.

    Never ending story. when our transport department & RTA will wake up ? instead of doing 4 lanes make a separate road for trucks & other heavy vehicles & save some precious lives.RIP

    This idiot driver either was drunk or not holding a valid driving license. Many of this heavy vehicle drivers were cleaner who sit on the wheels under the instruction from real driver causing deadly accident. When they were caught by traffic police they come out by paying small tips. There is no permanent solutions for this type of social problem and they are bound to recur

    Banning heavy vehicles during peak hours is not a solution for accidents. If so, then what about busses, they too involve in accidents and also comes under heavy vehicle's category.

    There is no proper control from our RTO's

    All drivers of night buses from mangalore to bangalore start their trip with alcohol, who is controlling them and how to control them since these vehicles some individuals and attached to one operating company who holds no responsibility.

    RIP! Pray god that families overcome this tragedy.
    Anyone travelled through this stretch of so called National Highway can say that the construction is full of flaws. In fact entire stretch of NH-75 from Mlore to BC Road widened under Port connectivity project does not adhere to some of basic requirements of NH. Blame should also be on people, who refuse to part with land and bring political pressure. Look at the width of NH-75 from Nelamangala to Hassan. Rarely you see any surprise curves in this part. Compared to this, it is shame to call Mlore-BC Road stretch as NH.
    It is just another 4 lane road.
    Cant blame NHAI alone as people also seem to be happy with status quo. God alone knows what is in store for B.C.Road to Nelyadi portion. Again another 4 lane without service roads and with 1 feet divider ?

    A deadly accident which took away 5 precious lives and critically injured three. Accidents do happen due to several reasons. this could have been avoided but it was destiny. May the deceased rest in eternal peace and wish a speedy recovery of those injured in this horrible ghastly accident.

    Truck drivers should be educated for lane discipline. they are supposed to drive on the slow lane. In Kerala Rishiraj Singh tried this to certain degree of success before he was transferred out of traffic dept due to politics.

    when he was driving too fast what our traffic police department was doing. any how our political parties blaming each other nothing happening on ground. at least everywhere should be traffic police to see these rash driving not just asking for salary hike and all other facilities.

    It is a very unfortunate incident. For no fault of theirs young lives have been lost.

    I travel on this route on a daily basis. The Road design at the accident spot is totally unscientific and has a dangerous curve and slope. During rainy season the spot gets flooded with water and catches the driver unaware.

    That stretch of the road is unworthy of being called national Highway. It obviously does not meet the specifications and someone has turned a blind eye.

    They could have made the road straight and filled it up to match the level. But they chose to just leave it with original level probably because of the houses built there just adjascent to the highway. There is no way the houses could have become legal except for strange reasons.

    This is wake up call for Smart City Administrators who are not so smart. Some time back I have given in writing to DC to ban Tankers and Container trucks during peak hours.
    Second suggestion was,not to let Cranes on the road but should be carried on flat Bed Trucks. This is because if a loaded bus with standing passengers stops suddenly and Crane is behind the Bus with driver of the Crane on Mobile will ram His crane into the bus thus killing many standing Passengers.
    Other suggestion was not to let tractors on road during peak hours. The reason behind this is that almost all tractors carry worker sitting on mud guard disturbing the driver talking and laughing. This will take away drivers attention from driving to enjoying the jokes. Thus killing few on tractor if involved in accident and few on the road.
    JCB Back Hoe vehicles are crawling in between the other vehicles. The front bucket moves from left to right to left. This bucket may brush a Bus with standing Passengers on foot board of the bus. Few will face the death.

    I do agree with the comments of KRPrabhu,Mangalore/Bangalore that heavy vehicles plying during day time should be banned or at least they should be given some specific timing except during peak hours to ply.Cameras at some sensitive places should be installed in order to avoid rash driving and over speeding like in gulf/middle east countries.
    Besides stopping of auto-rickshaws,city buses at unspecified places also should be banned.They have to stop/halt only at specified bus stops,Auto stands.In the event of absence of such stops,stands,RTO should make an arrangement for providing them bays,stops,stands.After that they can not even pick up a passenger,from the point they like.Picking up passengers from designated,unspecified places not only create nuisance to the pedestrians/public but also create a heavy congested traffic.This discipline should be adopted by both auto-rickshaw drivers and city bus drivers.Even public also should be adhered to this rule.
    See in this ghastly serial accidents 5 precious lives have been lost and 3 seriously injured.May God rest the departed soul of the deceased in eternal peace and pray to God for the speedy recovery of the injured.

    This too bad. Generally one would feel safe driving on the lane with divider system. We should think of get rid of these divider and should only have white/yellow line marking instead of dividers
