Mangaluru, Jun 10: “Kadri and Kankanady markets have got the administrative and technical approvals. Kavoor market and Kavoor junction work at the cost of Rs 1 crore has been sanctioned and work would start shortly,” said Mangaluru city corporation mayor Harinath.

He was addressing media persons on Friday June 10 at MCC office and briefed about the points discussed in the meeting with the urban development minister in Bengaluru on June 9.

Harinath said, “Previously when single tender was received, MCC had to take permission from the deputy commissioner which created a delay in the tender process. So in yesterday’s meeting in Bengaluru, we have urged the urban minister to simplify the process and give approval so that the decision can be taken in the city corporation council. Minister has responded positively and promised to pass the orders in the next two days.”

“Many developmental works are being undertaken by the city corporation and the files need to be sent twice or thrice to Bengaluru which creates unnecessary delay. So we have urged the government to increase the council decision cap from Rs 1 crore to Rs 5 crore. Kadri and Kankanady markets have already got the administrative and technical approvals. Kavoor market and Kavoor junction work at the cost of Rs 1 crore has been sanctioned and work would start shortly.” he added.

“With the view to provide uninterrupted water supply to the city, we have urged the government to file interim petition to the court asking for the approval to pump drinking water from the Lakya dam. There is about Rs 100 crore in the premier affair but we have some constraints in utilizing this fund for necessary road works and other pending works. So we have asked the UD secretary to relax the premier affairs policy. The UD minister and principal secretary have positively responded for all the requests and promised to take necessary actions.

“For the homeless, night shelter has been constructed at the cost of Rs 1 crore at Bunder. The work is in final stage and will be inaugurated shortly. A dining hall will be constructed in town hall premises at the cost of Rs 1 crore, foundation stone will be laid by the coming week. To make Mangaluru plastic free city, about 15000 cloth bags will be distributed free of cost. Two emergency committees are formed which would be working round the clock and in case of water clogging. People can contact them on 2220306 and 2220319.” he concluded.

Clarifying further about his visit to Bengaluru, he said, “I met the chief minister only to discuss the developmental issues of the city and not to complain against anyone as mentioned in media.”
