Bantwal, Jun 12: The driver of the container lorry, which hit the divider and crashed onto an auto rickshaw and a Maruthi 800, killing five persons, was reportedly using the phone while driving. The accident took place on Friday, June 10.
As per the onlookers, the driver of the container lorry approaching from B C Road was speaking on the mobile. As the mobile fell down, he was trying to pick it when he lost control of the vehicle. The lorry jumped over the divider and crashed on the auto rickshaw and Maruthi 800 being driven from the opposite side.

The last rites of deceased Mohammed Nazir, Mohammed Salam, Mohammed Unais, Abbas and Sinan were performed on Saturday June 11. All of them belong to poor families.

Mohammed Nazir (29) was the son of Bantwal taluk Sajipa Munnoor resident Yusuf. He was an auto driver. Nazir was married and has a-three month old child.
Salam (22), resident of Nandavara was a cricket player. He was the son of Nandavar resident Siddik. Being unmarried, he was working as painter. He had gone out to recharge his phone when the accident took place. He had even talked to his father before recharging the phone.
Sinan (16) son of Maripalla resident Hameed was a resident of Maripalla. He was a student of SSLC at Star tutorials, Mangaluru. He used travel by bus. He had boarded the bus as usual on Friday June 10. His friends were in the auto rickshaw which met with the accident. His friends in the auto had telephoned him asking him to get down from the bus at Padil and come with them in the auto.
Unais (20), son of Beerpugudde resident Ibrahim was staying in the house of his maternal aunt at Valachil. As there was Ifthar gathering in the Valachil house, he had accompanied his younger sister from Beerpugudde to Valachil. He was walking towards Fanrangipet when the container lorry took away his life.
Shabi Abbas (48), resident of Vitla, was a textile merchant. He was coming in the car from Mangaluru when the accident occurred. He is survived by two sons and a daughter and was the only earning member in the family.
Zameer, son of Abdul Khader and Shekabba, son of Saukat, residents of Sajipamannur were injured in the accident. They are being treated in a private hospital in Mangaluru.
Deceased Nazir, Salam and the two injured were neighborhood friends and were in Nandavara till Friday evening 3 pm, informed locals.
Bantwal tahsildar Purandara Hegde and staff visited the houses of the deceased and conveyed their condolences.
