Kasargod, Jun 14: In a tragic road accident which occurred at Pallikere, Bekal at around 6.45 pm on Monday June 13, six members of a family were killed. The accident occurred when a car in which the victims were travelling hit a roadside tree near Pallikere panchayat office on Kanhangad Road leading to the town. Road development works are in progress at this stretch.
Four among the deceased
Those who lost their lives in this accident are Sakeena (39), wife of Hameed from Chetukundu, her children, Sajeer (18) and Saneer (16), Sakeena's brother's wife, Kairunnisa (24), Kairunnisa's daughter, Fatima (2), and Ramseena (25), wife of Irfan. Two children, Ajmal (4), son of Sakeena, and an eight-month-old child of Irfan, who were also travelling with parents in the ill-fated car, survived with injuries. Both of them stand admitted into a hospital.
It is said that the driver of the vehicle suddenly lost control over the vehicle when moving through Pallikere village. The family of Hameed was travelling to meet a family of relatives living in the town from Chetukundu for participating in Iftar party on the occasion of Ramzan. For unexplained reasons, the car went out of control of the driver as soon as it entered the portion of the road where work is in progress t is said. The car then hit a roadside banyan tree before tumbling. Two died on the spot due to the gravity of the accident, while four more breathed their last at the hospital.
Sajeer, who was driving the vehicle, and Kairunnisa, had died instantly. The others survived their journey to the hospital but could not be saved. The eight-month-old child referred above was tossed away from the road during the accident. It suffered minor injuries and is out of danger.
Police worked with fire brigade and locals to rescue the injured from inside the badly mangled car and transport them to hospital. Chetukundu village and surrounding areas were enveloped in gloom of grief on account of the near decimation of an entire family from there.
District collector, D Devadasan, MLA, K Kunhiraman, and others visited the spot. A case about the accident was registered in Bekal police station. Investigation has been undertaken.
