Karkala: 18 lorries illegally transporting sand to other districts seized

Karkala, Jun 15: Rural police inspector Rafiq led police team has seized 18 lorries illegally transporting sand to various places in Chikkamagaluru district.

The operation conducted from Monday midnight till the wee hours on Tuesday was fearful for the illegal transporters of sand. Large quantity of sand is being transported from Gurpur, Addooru, Polali, Kaikamba etc. Accidents have increased in Western Ghats foothills due to sand laden lorries.

The lorries which are loading excessive amount of sand without permission are driving their vehicles recklessly harassing light vehicles without giving sides. The developments caused the need for the operations, as per sources in the police investigating department.

Rafiq, who was newly appointed as sub-inspector in the rural police station a month ago, has taken action against 55 lorries and collected Rs 5 lacs as fine.

The operation was temporarily suspended due to political pressure and resumed again on Monday, June 13.

    it's just a drama... or else everybody knows how many lorries run around in the districts carrying sand. Same like water we ditched ourselves and ended up crying for of water recently, same way we will end up in sand also. all these illegal activists will clean up the same on our rever bed also like this and one day we will be crying with our sand and in turn revers being dried up. Unless authorities realize the seriousness and wake up, this illegal sand mining will continue.

    There are many river basin in Karnataka is filled with sand and causing flood due to interruption free flow.

    Why don't state government mark those area through Geology department allocated it through bidding?
