Bengaluru: State bans e-cigarettes - sale to attract five years jail term

Bengaluru, Jun 16: The state government, through an order, has placed blanket ban on sale of e-cigarettes containing nicotine cartridges all over the state with immediate effect. This was announced by health and family welfare minister, U T Khader, at a press conference organized at Vikasa Soudha on Wednesday June 15.

Khader said that sale of e-cigarettes including online sales, production, distribution, trading, import, and giving advertisement have been banned. At present, this ban is in force in Haryana and Punjab states, he explained.

"As per the current norms, there is no provision for use of e-cigarettes in the state. However,without getting licence from competent authority, illegally it is being sold even through internet. Health department has noticed that people are using it. Therefore a decision to ban it has been taken," the minister explained.

Khader said that the department has been keeping an eye on websites involved with sale of e-cigarettes with the help of cyber crime cell. If they continue this activity, concerned websites will be closed and legal steps will be taken, he added.

E-cigarettes are made from plastic and metal. Cartidges prepared by mixing chemicals like propylene glycol with banned nicotine are fitted into e-cigarettes. Electric chargers provided therein provide the heat to create smoke that is inhaled. Nicotine is poisonous for humans, and it might also give rise to diseases of the heart and lungs. This habit can turn into addiction.

Violators of the ban will face criminal case and if the violation is proved, the concerned can be jailed for a period up to five years.

    Mr. UT Khader, I thought you were literate and had some common sense, but by your senseless act you have proven otherwise!
    Do you have any clue on the composition of e-cigarettes and how they help smokers to kick the habit — no you don't! Instead because morons like Khattar and Badal have banned e-cigarettes you have followed suit! Tomorrow if Khattar and Badal jump in the well, I hope you would too!
    Wake up Khader, wake up, educate yourself on health issues before making ad hoc decisions based on your whims and fancies!!!

    Haha...if only they knew my political views they would know I'm completely opposite to what they call bhakts .
    But anyways matters like these where people's lives and health are at stake we need to forget politics and focus on the greater good.
    Not blaming any party here. It's the general mindset in India regarding e cigs that's sad . Maharashtra had banned e cigs a few years ago again without any research. Our country needs to follow facts not just some people's own opinion on things to ban things .

    Yes there hasn't been long term research and more time is needed .
    But almost all the researchers agree there are almost no toxic chemicals present and if present they are negligible compared to regular cigarettes.
    I don't think it's gonna destroy our future generation. Lol
    As I said before the point here is harm reduction . People are much better off vaping than smoking.
    Just compare the chemicals in cigarettes vs e cigs

    This is such a disappointment. The govt has done no credible research before banning e cigs . The motive behind this is clearly lobbying from tobacco companies like ITC which stand to benefit .
    If you do even a little bit of research online you can find out that e cigs are ridiculously much more safer than regular cigarettes. According to an official UK govt study e cigs are atleast 95% safer than cigarettes. E cigs are mainly used by smokers to help them quit . E cigs have the highest success rates when it comes to helping people quit the cancer sticks.
    There's a lot of misinformation in the media regarding e cigs .
    If you watch a documentary by BBC titled E cigs : miracle or menace you will see more clearly why some people call e cigs one of the biggest medical innovations that can save millions of lives .
    At a time when DOCTORS in UK and many other countries are recommending smokers to switching to Vaping(e cigs) our govt here is banning them . Just plain stupid .
    Nicotine by itself is not at all harmful .
    And when they talk about students getting addicted it's all non sense . I think everyone here has seen kids smoking cigarettes right outside their schools/colleges.
    If regular cigarettes are not banned I don't see any credible reason as to why to ban e cigs . What about people who have successfully quit smoking thanks to vaping ? Does the govt want them to go back to smoking ?
    UT Khader needs to understand science and how research is done .
    In this case some committee of "cancer prevention" used an NGO to conduct a study and come up with this conclusion. It's just hilarious. World over scientists are telling how much safer e cigs are.
    Yes e cigs may not be completely safe but the goal here is harm reduction. Unless you ban cigarettes completely why ban something that helps people make their lives better.
    Also the argument that there hasn't been enough research done is wrong. There's been a lot research and it clearly points to e cigs being much safer

    Ideally we shudnt be doing either of them .
    But we don't live in a perfect world. People smoke . And anyone who smokes knows it's not easy to give up . Nicotine gums and patches have very low success rates in helping people quit . Only vaping has the highest success rates when it comes to helping people quit smoking .
    I've personally quit smoking thanks to e cigs .
    Also about nicotine, in e cigs liquids you have the choice to how much nicotine you want . Mostly people use 3mg or 6mg levels . But I've gradually reduced my nicotine consumption and gone down to 0mg . Yes you get e liquids without any nicotine too which just helps you replicate the feeling of smoking without any effects.
    Maybe UT Khader was misled by the committee who knows . I hope he reverses this ban . Only problem is how do we let him know the facts ?

    Khadar saab, It is always better rather to keep mum and let other think that you are a fool than opening your mouth and proving it!

    For your information, Nicotine is not dangerous. It is just a stimulant which increases the release of Adrenalin, subsequently increasing the heartbeat a little. The effect is same as that of caffeine.
    Nicotine is not a carcinogen either.
    E-cigarettes are banned in air crafts only because there is a heating element in it. E-cigs as such do not have any negative effects on human body which surpass the effects of beedi, cigarettes and Gutka!
