Chennithala had come to Kasargod for the first time after becoming opposition leader. A congratulatory meeting was held on the third floor in district bank building by Kasargod district Congress committee. The incident took place there when he took the lift with others. He had to remain in the lift for about 30 minutes. District congress president C K Sridharan, former MLA K P Kunhikannan, Balakrishna Vorkodlu, P A Ashrafali and others were accompanying him. The lift had stopped due to power failure, it is said.

As there was no facility to rectify technical faults in the building, fire brigade had to be called. Ramesh Chennithala later participated in the felicitation programme held by district Congress in district bank auditorium.
