It is real shocking and sad to see such an accident involving school kids. Sometimes feel how god can be so cruel? The first and foremost thing is to install speed breakers on all buses plying on NH. Second thing is having a service road mandatory running parallel so that these kind of tragedies can be averted by allowing common public to use that road instead of coming to main road and having bypass or under bridge to cross where it is necessary. Unless this is done strictly, nothing is going to change.

Extremely distressed on learning about this heart rending tragedy.
Our intersections especially the local roads leading to the highways are extremely ill designed. There is no safety for vehicles entering or merging onto highways.

Does this indicate that something is rotten in our organizational intelligence or our inability to come up with better designs especially in public domain? Are our vested interests rule the roost in every new construction project? Are our politicians - cutting the ribbons, giving speeches on highway safety at the same time behind our backs compromise these projects?

Thailand which is a developing nation has recently developed excellent roads and cities due to their excellent planning. What is it that we lack?

How many more have to die due to our collective failure to provide safe transport? Can our roads stand the scrutiny of international experts and get a passing grade on safety?

My dear parents of the LITTLE ANGELS who have said bye to you, I know that you are & will not be in a position to read the condolences messages written here. Little ever you might have imagined that your little one/ones would not return to say bye again the next morning ! How to console you with consoling words is unthinkable and inexpressible. No song, no poem,no poetry can contain your sorrow and the feeling of loss your dear child/children.

You might have also thought for a moment whether to send your little one to school through the violent weather!

In the words of Friedrich Ruckert kindly accept my heartfelt sympathies:

    "IN THIS WEATHER"
In this weather, in this windy storm,
I would never have sent the children out.
    They have been carried off,
I wasn't able to warn them!

In this weather, in this gale,
I would never have let the children out.
    I feared they sickened:
those thoughts are now in vain.

In this weather, in this storm,
I would never have let the children out,
I was anxious they might die the next day:
    now anxiety is pointless.

In this weather, in this windy storm,
I would never have sent the children out.
    They have been carried off,
I wasn't able to warn them!

In this weather, in this gale, in this windy storm,
they rest as if in their mother's house:
    frightened by no storm,
sheltered by the Hand of God.

MAY THEIR SOUL REST IN PEACE. AMEN.

I wish speedy recovery to all the injured children and teachers including Martin.

The driver was not crossing, Bus and Omni were moving in the same direction with Omni in front!. The Omni just slowed to take a left turn and bus hit it at high speed!. Just visit that place and school and you will understand. Bus was wrong in moving behind the Omni when there were two lanes and he should have moved forward using the right lane!. Remember, left lane is for slow moving vehicles and Omni was on left lane.

No words, except tears. All that I have to dedicate to the LITTLE ANGELS is the sorrowful poem by Friedich Ruckert :

"I OFTEN THINK: THEY HAVE ONLY JUST GONE OUT"

I often think: they have only just gone out,
and now they will be coming back home.

The day is fine, don't be dismayed,
They have just gone for a long walk.
Yes indeed, they have just gone out,
and now they are making their way home.

Don't be dismayed, the day is fine,
they have simply made a journey to yonder heights.
They have just gone out ahead of us,
and will not be thinking of coming home.

We go to meet them on yonder heights
In the sunlight, the day is fine
    On yonder heights.

ETERNAL REST TO ALL MY LITTLE ONES AND HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES TO MY BROTHERS & SISTERS & ALL THE BEREAVED RELATIVES.

I just held my comments ... was going through the comments given here... 99 % blame bus drivers and their reckless driving. Unfortunately authorities and police still don't realize. There are few disagrees also. I am sure all those folks need their kids to die in such accidents , especially due to bus drivers recklessness, then they may agree and press it. Any ways, I don't see any hope that we will get to see some actions or improvement is coming days , than just statements. May be we need to think of something , some strict action for such drivers... if we take law in hand for one or 2 instances, then they themselves may realize that their life is in threat if they continue.

If you notice, the point of impact on the omni is left side body. How can this happen if the collision was head-on ?? That suggests that the omni driver must have taken a sudden 90 degree turn and the speeding bus couldn't stop on time and hit it at 90 degrees on the left side body. And hence the omni driver escaped death. This suggests that the omni driver either didn't signal properly and took a right turn in a hurry or the bus driver didn't expect such a sudden right turn from omni. Or may be the heavy rain led to this confusion.

The bus is not the usual bigger, lengthy, heavier bus that plies between Mangalore and Udupi. It is a much smaller, lighter, shorter bus and hence due to God's grace 12 lives could be saved. If it was a normal bigger bus, things would have been more disastrous. God is great. He minimized the effect.

    all behave like rowdies.

    for example,

at kankanady junction, in from of previous house of late blasiaum d souaza, even though a good bus bay is arranged by district administration, still city buses are being parked exactly at junction resulting in block.

same in front of Indiana hospital

    same at bendoorwell circle.

same in front of unity hospital

same at falnir road, just after father mullers.

why cant they park 100 meters after the circle.

why the hell we need RTO,traffic police, if this is happening right in front of their nose.

Last time there was a news posted about private buses being not allowed for renewal of permits and here on daiji, 90% people supported private buses claiming that private buses are "clean" in comparison to government buses, hope they understand whats more important. All school vehicles are overcrowded and no safety at all. The simply lost their precious life just because of our own stupidity.

Dear readers, Many people have commented regarding the carrying the bus over capacity. Accident is not cause of carrying over capacity. It is the negligence of over speeding bus driver. When small villages do not have school bus facility what the parents can do. They have to depend on whatever facility available to send the their children to the school. We can avoid this if govt. or school provide transport to the small villages. This is a great shock for the parents who lost their two two children. Every small villages have enough vehicles but no one can voluntarily help the parents having transport problem. There are many ways to blame each other. We adults have failed to provide you safety. everyone in mangalore knows how rashly the private bus drivers drive in this case even after hitting the van the ruthless driver didn't stop and dragged the van this shows they are absolutely ruthless and think they own the mangalore roads even if a passenger tells them to lower speed they will tell to get down high time action to be taken against this drivers legal case to be filed and see that they do not come out on bail. this will be lesson to other ruthless drivers. this is only way, no govt will come to help of aam admi.also speed breakers and signals to be installed at all turning and important point and RTO policemen who are busy taking bribes should be held responsible if they do not catch hold of law breakers. this needs to be implemented on war breaking also children to transported in better vehicles keeping colour code and capacity as important factor.

No amount of words can console those who lovingly packed their kids of to school and were awaiting their arrival after school. Tears roll down the cheek when you imagine how each of them would have cried out for their parents in pain and not find them. You cannot blame anyone saying that the Omni was crowded etc. Nobody would expect such a tragedy, they are all tight on a budget trying to give the best, best education etc., may be they cannot afford extra charges. I dont think everybody can afford a separate transport system. The school should have their Transport facility to transport kids and can charge them.

I hope these angels are safe with GOD and wish that they come back to their parents again in a new birth to console them and hopefully carry their life forward.

While i fully agree with your suggestions, let me tell u the fact. I have numerous times reported the dangerous ways in which the bus drivers ply on the road to Mlore Traffic Police page on fb. No response. Had reported a case of an auto driver thru watsapp during Feb 2015, no response. Have reported the traffic jam at Bendurwell circle and Bethany School during the peak hours, no response. Who will bell the cat Sir. We are responsible and wouldn't want such type of tragedies in our families and around us. We are to blame the careless attitude of RTO and police department for such tragedies.

Today I see RTO officials at St Agnes School. It will be an eye wash till this incident is forgotten. We see RTO officials every 15 days in hot spots stopping 2 wheelers and collecting bribes. R the lives of people travelling in public transport not important to these officials? Hope good sense prevails.

Are we finding clients to this Hospital and doctors?
The Police and road transport department must act now and ban all these toy cars used as school van and ambulance.
A school Van should have a seat and seat belt for every child.

The speed the buses travel, the attitude of the conductors should change and this will change only you have the Govt. buses. In this case the Omni is not a taxi it as no yellow board. One of saddest day in my life, because I have grand Children. This is the very same reason I alone fight this Crime everyday because innocent person loses life. Almost everyday I call PCR or Traffic Inspector Suresh Kumar, when I observe Rash Driving with Horn. Many are crying and many are wishing Rest In Peace after the Death. These innocent Angels are in Peace because they did not Commit any Crime but they paid the price for someone else's Crime.
I have Question to everyone who wrote Sympathy Comments. RIP

    1. Did you take any action when you saw speeding buses with ear piercing horns? Little Children's Ear Drum can be damaged. But I have done it everyday so that a Child like one who died in today's accident could be saved.

    2. What have you done when the Bus you were traveling was speeding and trying to overtake the Bus that is in front of it? If something goes wrong You along with other Passengers could get killed and leave loved ones in tragedy.

    3. What have you done when you saw a Omni Van and Rickshaws carry too many Children beyond the capacity? Look here this Omni was carrying 18 Children in it plus the teacher. How is that Teacher allowed Omni Driver to carry that many Children?Money Talks.

4 What have you done when You saw Ambulances carrying little Children in which Sick People were transported?

I have stopped it through RTO. When I spoke to headmistress Nun,She answered that it is not Her responsibility of what is happening outside the School. Only the Donation which comes from outside is her responsibility.
So now on please think of these dead Children and stop these Traffic Violations.

Here is the Number You can call and Stop the death of your loved ones.
    Police Control Room: 0824-222-0800

I recollect a complaint I telephonically raised to 1098 regarding some kids begging on the busy Jyothi Circle traffic signal, which included a 1 year old child in another kid's arms. They did call me back saying that the kids have been warned! I repeat.. Warned.. Next day I saw the kids again in the same place.

WELL PARENTS ARE TO PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN REFUSING TO SEND THEIR KIDS IN OVERCROWDED TRANSPORT

India is considered one of the most dangerous places in the world to drive. And accidents such as this only highlight this fact. What is the use of our ministers going abroad to study their infrastructure by using our money? Have they studied anything? Let them open their eyes and look at the highways and the flyovers that are built in foreign countries. Mangalore is not capable of constructing a single good flyover. Look at the flyovers in Surathkal, B.C. Road or near Kulshekar. They are death beds, not flyovers. We call ourselves the fastest growing economy in the world. Motorists can never be sure of returning home safely. We are totally at the mercy of other drivers. When will our so called leaders wake up and save lives? The plain truth is that nobody cares for lives in India. Look at the way the foreign countries take care of the lives of their residents. Compare it to our lives.

As a country we dont have any vehicle safety monitoring body set up by government. Recently NCAP is testing Indian cars and rating, which is not encouraged by Govt. & Auto Industries. The police should arrange awareness campaign in schools about safety (ex. Wearing Seat Belt). Lastly in DK Private Bus should be made mandatory to have Speed Governor. As this young uneducated drivers think they are Pilot on Road.

it is very sad that so many small lives have been taken away by this tragic accident. The Transport department, Police and other authorities should urgently implement measures to avoid overspeeding and rash driving. The private buses are so reckless that they wouldn't even slow down for a person to cross the road on zebra crossings. The authorities have to implement immediate measures to curb the menace of rash driving of Private buses and impose harsh penalties on defaulters.. not just a fine.

It is high time now all experts sit together including police and school authorities and come up with concrete measures to prevent such mishaps. As the broadened highway would encourage more speeding there should be some strict rules to protect school going children as well as others. This should be done on high priority.

I hope Udupi SP Mr. Annamallai will surely think on these lines and come up with some initiative. If any national law needs to be changed to bring some rules there should be a immediate recommendation in this regard. We should not treat this as a just other accident. The Police who have the right to stop such a horrible practice just ignore them. The same Police don't hesitate to stop heavy vehicles abruptly near Nanthoor & Pumpwell, (even putting the motorists who are behind or beside the heavy vehicle in risk of being run over and killed) to check "documents".

The vehicle meant for 8 passenger is carrying 20. There is no norms in Indian transport system. In average half million people killed in India just on road accident.

Other than the toll gates there is no much improvement in the system despite change in government.

Moreover these private transport is moving coffin. They have no regards for anyone on the road.

Why was a bus which is transporting children painted yellow? It should have speed governors. This is the second week of rain and so many accidents. Its so miserable to see the parents watching the deaths of their kids at this age and that too due to the faults of a driver.

Our rules are meant for books only. Is there a law that the driver follows? You can surely agree with me that the drivers feel they are the owners of the roads and can drive as they like competing on the roads. Why not the GOI come out a law where the driver will think before driving and drive safely?PM travels country to country and have he ever seen how carefully the driver drives? Because they cannot harm any person on the road. Because the law is so strict, it helps the public to walk carefully too.

Who can wipe the tears of these parents? who can console the kids who have luckily escaped? This will remain in their hearts and minds forever.

Mr. Modi, ministers, RTO's of all states, its high time for you to learn and bring out a law so that every driver think about the people in the other vehicles and on the roads than themselves.

heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families of little Angles.

this is bound to happen in our coastal districts as I was shocked to see in my eyes the way school children are transported. even the famous school little rock carry 3 times of capacity in one bus, children are seated on the lap of each students and then walkway is jam packed, there is no safety concerns to anybody. and these buses and autos pass infront of all the police and RTO, but all are blind to see ! Parents are ready to spend any amount for expensive schools, but not worried for safe transport of their beloved kids ! all this is because of our Çhalta hey'attitude !

this incident has no ending in people who have witnessed and related. at least a little effort of the concerned authorities can make a sense to stop permitting illegalised unsafe education. is that our government so poor to provide reasonable standard of education to all. if the government really is honest in governing let us have equal and standard quality education provided to all children at least the basic education which can upheld he rights of children and justify the education for each citizen. if we consciously analyze middle class and poor children of India go to such unsafe schools.whether they really donot deserve good education? parents also are not bothered t safeguard the innocent citizens of tomorrow.competition between schools increase the greed in school managements and even parents. does the omini has any safety facility to transport children? can it hold 23 passengers? is any school given permission to carry children in such vehicles whether school managers innocent, ignorant? IS THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BODES BLIND? now the innocents are murdered by whom?who gives permission to buses to have reckless speed? people do not lobby for social security and safety on fight for comfortable self seats. if there is any education minister who is not educated to let it happen open the conscience and see.

my humble request with all respected parents fight for your children's safety. know how we rear our kids. nothing is safe in this world now if it happens or starts from schools from where we are supposed to learn good. wake up. i am very sory to witness this heart breaking thundering incident in our so called educated city of Udupi and south canara. i had no words to console those feeble hearts of innocent diseased.I pray God it should never repeat anywhere to any child . please give strength to the parents of diseased and rest the kinds in peace. As a parent I curse the school authority and the concerned governmental bodies.

R.I.P. dear children. v unfortunate. May Lord give strength to parents to bear the grief. people get up from your slumber before more innocents are murdered on road. the RTO should impose speed limit and also issue challans for rash driving. install speed breakers, signals at all relevant points. school vehicles to strictly follow vehicle rules w.r.t. capacity colour etc. people travelling in private buses shud themselves take the driver to task if they rash drive. private buses are indeed driving recklessly w/o any concern of other small vehicles or people walking crossing on roads. high time these drivers are thought a lesson, so that more lives are not lost unnecessarily. after all these murderous drivers come out easily on bail, poor accidents victims and their families suffer life long.

And I feel the authorities must press for more safety for school vehicles at least I am at loss of words for the shock i experienced after hearing this news. My suggestions
    1) In rainy season speed must be below 50 km per hour for public utility vehicles

People should agitate in front of concerned authorities to change the rules and implement all together. Jam the roads/highways only the alternative. Corruption is the main reason behind. Traffic police ignore such vehicles up to receive money from time to time. Parents stop to send there children's in those vehicles exceed the quantity limit. After all all are belonged to middle class..are trying to reduce money to run home. It's also not there fault. Again in final curse the destiny.

These things are bound to happen sooner or later where adherence to safety is non existent.

Just note how many of them were travelling in omni...around 18!!!! Omni at max can carry only 8. Granted the they will put more in there since they are children. But then how can there be any safety for them... cause i dont know of any small vehicle supplying 18 seat belts.

In india we dont usually value life. We just comment as if we are shocked and saddened... but are we really?? We always think about how much money we can save and completely disregard safety, thinking its all in fate. This stupid mentality has led to a point where very unsafe cars are sold be the manufacturers, people riding two wheelers with out proper safety gear, overcrowded buses (some barely hanging near the door step).

Shocked n horrified to react to read the entire event. RTO is in slumber. As parents don't we have responsibility to question the so called inhuman way of transporting the little ones to school? Is Omni a safe vehicle? No its not then why use it? Children are pickled in and driven as though the driver is a formula 1 driver. Yet no one objects. We make noise when such ghastly accidents happen and then it becomes history. Moment regulations are brought in the drivers say thats their bread n butter n the officials are depriving them of their livelihood. Who will decide how much is too much? One needs to see to believe the way even the police turn a blind eye when children are pickled in. Were these little ones children of a lesser God? Had the authorities put in some norms and regulations this could have been averted. May the little angels plead to God for sadbuddi to all concerned. Safe passage little ones and may your loved ones be comforted in this time of unwarranted grief.

Busy enjoying bribes paid by the owners. High time the citizens get together and do something before they kill more people.

Shocking... Heart broken.. How many more innocent lives should die on road to wake up authorities? Its true there is no complete solution for accidents but this series of accidents will not be reduced until CANCELLING ALL THE PRIVET BUSES AND CONTROLLING HEAVY TRANSPORTS DURING DAY TIMES / PEAK HOURS. PROPER IMPLEMENTATION OF TRAFFIC RULES, CONTROLLING SPEED TROUGH RADARS / CAMERAS AND RANDOM PATROLLING OF TRAFFIC OFFICIALS, Heavy fines... There is many more which could partially reduce such tragedies.

I totally agree with u. But we cannot always hold the authorities for such incidents. Yes the authorities should put in place certain systems to control such incidents. But aren't the people equally guilty. How do u justify a white omni having no yellow paint or school board transporting school students on a daily basis. And taking 22 passengers on board while the capacity should be not more than 5. Isn't the school also equally responsible for allowing the kids to use such modes of transportation while they could have deployed school buses. How do u justify speeding at a neck break speed by an omni carrying children.the guilt has to be shared by all. By all I mean the school authorities, police, government, drivers and parents

18 Children .. we say OMG...!!!!
    i agree, its illegal...
But how much amount we pay to the Omni Driver to , one child to School?
300 per month/ 400 per month or maximum 500 per month..
    Calculate 18*500 only...
whats his income = 9000.00 per month
    out of which fuel charge...
his wages, maintenance of the vehicle .. family expenditure and so on... how much will remain to that poor driver?
we sit in gulf or other respective places and commenting in a stupid way, legal action legal action..
stop commenting in a very childish way... realise the fact.. Everyone is not rich in India.

    Pinto, Bajpe
    Roshan, Mangaluru
    and others
Please note the driver is doing his business. He may carry 10\12 or 18 in his omni. Of course it is illegal which authorities are responsible for not taking action.

Point is: Every parent of the child who used this Omni for transportation of their child\children, know the number of children that Omni was carrying. Did they ever think that it is dangerous\over crowded for their children to travel like that?
No, they have willingly\knowingly hired this transport for reasons only known to them.
If anybody has to take the blame, it is the parents of those children....
Accidents do happen even when the number in the vehicle is within the limit.
Accidents happen for various reasons, not just because a vehicle is over stuffed although it may be a good reason.

It is so sad children lost their lives in a tragic way and parents should learn\take care in future to use transport which plies legally where there is chance to sue in case there is accident and injuries\death has occurred.

    R.I.P. to all deceased and
god-speed for recovery of the injured.

Take care parents from now on.

Either Omnis should be banned from carrying school children OR
    - Omni carrying School children should be painted in specific color (Blue, yellow etc..) to identify easily as 'School Van'
    - Strict rule on Number of student in the vehicle (should not be over loaded)
    - Seat belt for each child
    - Driver must have driving experience over 15-20 years.
    - Other vehicles should maintain safe distance from School Van & who drives so close to School van should be penalized
