Mangaluru, Jun 21:"Planting more and more plants in the city is the need of the hour and all necessary steps are being taken to make Mangaluru green city in the coming two years" said Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo.

Addressing a press meet at his office here on June 21, Lobo said "Many developmental works are being undertaken in the city and it has unavoidable at some places to cut trees. In order to increase greenery in the city we have undertaken a drive to plant more and more plants. During the construction of road from Kankanady to Nandigudda about 50 trees were cut and to compensate that about 250 plants will be planted in this stretch as part of the project. During construction of footpath, plants will also be planted."

"Green cess is also imposed on new buildings and under urban planting scheme about 3,000 saplings will be planted in various parts of the city. Besides various other steps are being taken by the forest department and Mangaluru city corporation MCC. Many organisations and building owners have come forward to maintain the plants. A particular area will be given to them, either they themselves can maintain the area or can look after the expenses and forest department will maintain. Plants will be planted in vacant areas in city corporations sewage treatment plant, dumping yard, dividers and other MCC property where there is space." Lobo explained.

"I have urged the Forest minister to develop three layers of plants in Pachanady dumping yard which will reduce the pollution in the surroundings. I also urge the support of general public. If tees are cut down for construction in inevitable circumstances, then plant as at least some plants wherever there is space. More plants will be planted in Kadri park and will make it a model park in the city. Congress party will also make a drive to plant at least 10 plants in each block. By planting more and more plants, it will help reduce carbon dioxide in the air and increase fresh oxygen." Lobo added.

" During the construction of road from Kankanady to Nandigudda about 50 trees were cut and to compensate that about 250 plants will be planted in this stretch as part of the project."

Sir, how & where you will plant 250 trees???

Is it Vegetable plants or flower plants? or plant which similar to the removed ones?

Where is the place to plant 250 with in that stretch??

Mr. Lobo your intentions are clear and good. But please make sure these plants are watered properly during non-monsoon months, so these trees can grow. The worst situation we have seen this year due to shortage of water in the city will hit the city every year until a concrete plan is put in place to preserve the rain water. Plants will die & labour, money & hardwork put up will go down the drain if the saplings are not taken care of... Solution put an end to yettinahole and use the fund for rain water harvest or build / increase the capacity of Thumbay dam etc., etc.,.. Jai Karnataka.

Firstly ask MESCOM to shift all electric wires underground. Then talk of making green city garden city. All we can see in mangalore is only coconut trees because other trees head are chopped off due to wires overhead. Secondly on kankanady road 50 trees were chopped off and you are saying 250 will be planted on that road? I failed to understand how it is possible?

I am amazed about the negative comments here by some people.

Expecting anything is always easy. But coming up with a vision, turning that vision into an action-plan, and delivering on that action-plan requires a lot of hard work, as well resources and commitment by various people.

Many other MLAs of the past had neither a vision, nor an action-plan on anything.

Mr Lobo has come up with a vision, and possibly worked an action-plan as he has mentioned a time-frame.

As citizens who possibly contribute nothing for this transformation, we must at least show a little gratitude towards Mr Lobo and the team.

Sincere thanks Mr Lobo for your untiring efforts.

BTW, it may not even be a responsibility of Mr Lobo, as he part of the Karnataka Government, and not of the Mangaluru Municipal Council.

There is a saying:"Tongue is Sharper than the Sword". Mr Lobo is holding the umbrella according Rain Pattern.
He is the same Person who Authorized Musical Fountain near Kadri Park which is d Illegal. Due to this Stupid Idea, more than 300 trees and green plants were chopped off. He should be held guilty for this action. He must have mistook green color for blue water of the fountain.
Now this green Idea will give Him Publicity through Cila Banner Advertisement.
He is talking about planting the saplings with foot paths. So when these sapling started to grow near the foot path,Pedestrians will loose their eyes through the spreading branches of the plants. Or else MESCOM will keep trimming until the plant dies.
Where was He when DC Office at Padil idea came up for discussion. May be there is black money to be made by Govt.Officials through planting saplings. Few thousand will end up in Area Corporator's deep pocket in the name of plants.

I am glad that you have woken up at least now. This should have been started much earlier. Along with planting trees, efforts should be made to educate the people about the importance of growing trees. There is no use in claiming that we are educated but we should translate that education into practice. By the way, it is ironic that the Forest Minister is silent about planting the trees when he should have taken the initiative to do this. Be that as it may, it is heartening that at least Mr. Lobo is showing some interest in planting trees. Now it is up to the people to support this initiative.

Is there any record of how many trees have been planted and how many plants grown in to tree all these years? This is just an eyewash. Every one should plant on both side of the highway some fruit bearing trees like Mangoes,Jack fruit, and also teakwood. People should collect fruit seeds and throw over forests when they go on long drive. These seeds will grow in to trees. Jack fruit is highest fruit bearing tree and which can drive ones hunger. So plant more jackfruit trees.

Mr Lobo I have a question for you, was it really necessary to cut down 50 trees in Kankanady to Nandigudda road, There were many alternatives ways the road can be widened. All the lands near valencia strech road is not a private properties, it belongs to religious institues, we could have atleast those instutes could have given some land so that we could have saved those 50 trees in that strech road. (I hope what i said make sense). Is it really necessary to cut down the trees in Padil & build DC office, cant the current DC office get renovated, so that we can save the trees & The money which can be utilized for other development works IN & around Mangalore. Why nobody protested this time when the tres were cut down for road widening.

    http://www.daijiworld.com/news/news_disp.asp?n_id=64872

On Aug 30 2009 every body were against the cutting of trees now where are those people why did not they protest this time is it due to political pressure.

Mangalore can be green naturally without water. As no public toilets have been built in the last 3 years within MCC you find most men urinating by the side of the road. Urine contains urea which acts as a fertilizer. Let the Govt. first build toilets in all areas in Mangalore and see that they are maintained well and clean with 24 x 7 water supply. Even in Kadri - Mallikatta, Kadri - Bendur area there is not a single public toilet.
