Mangaluru: Yettinahole - Oscar promises to organize meeting with CM

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 22: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member, Oscar Fernandes, said that he will soon arrange for meeting between the chief minister and anti-Yettinahole activists, experts, and others, in view of various problems the coastal district will face if Yettinahole project is implemented.

He was speaking after participating in 'Netravati Bachao - interaction programme with people's representatives from the district' organized by Netravati Rakshana Samyukta Samiti at Sahodaya Hall in the city on Tuesday June 21. He told the concerned that after fixing the date for the meeting, the concerned would be given advance intimation of 15 days.

"Along with the chief minister, officials of concerned departments, anti-project activists, and experts, will be present at the meeting. Towards clearing doubts on the project, during the meeting with the chief minister at Bengaluru, dates had been fixed for such a meeting twice, but both had to be postponed on account of elections. Now, minister for irrigation has agreed to hold the meeting again. Venue of the meeting, like whether in Bengaluru or Dakshina Kannada district, will be decided soon," he explained. He called upon the concerned to come up with suggestion about the venue of the meeting and who will participate in it from the district.

In reply to concerns raised by senior water expert, Prof S G Maiya, Oscar asked him to give all his questions in writing so that he can provide replies under Right to Information Act.

In his presentation, Maiya said that Yettinahole project, which is being projected now as a drinking water supply project, is planned to be supplied for industries, agriculture and meet water needs of Bengaluru city in course off time. Already Rs 15,000 crore being taxes collected from the people has been spent on this project, and no one knows how much more funds will go waste. There is no clarity about how much forest area will get destroyed by this project, He noted. He said that diversion of river water will have lasting affect on underground water table, and once river stops flowing, efforts to provide water by enriching water tables through percolation pits will be impracticable, he pointed out.

When Lobo questioned him about the probability of addressing water disputes and issues by the formation of Karnataka River Water Resources Authority, Maiya opined that a separate water policy can only provide solution to the problem.

Sudhir Shetty, a documentary photographer on environment, noted that this project was drawn by Narasimhappa and not Paramashivaiah. He said opinion from hydrologists had not been collected when drawing up this project.

Kemaru Sandeepani Math Sri Esha Vittalasa Swamiji, Gurpur Vajradehi math Sri Rajashekharananda Swamiji, parliamentary secretary to chief minister, Shakuntala Shetty, former MLA, Yogeesh Bhat, MLC, Pratapchandra Shetty, zilla panchayat president, Meenakshi Shantigodu and many others were present.

Head of Netravati Rakshana Samykta Samiti, Vijay Kumar Shetty, M G Hegde, Dinkar Shetty, Puruhotham Chitrapur, Satyajit Suratkal, Dinesh Holla, and others also participated in the meeting.

The people of Tulunad have been conducting meetings, discussions and agitations for over many years. Action has been nil. Instead of making useless arguments why cannot the Tuluvas and konkanis fight for Tulu Nad state and stop such kind of non stop injustice from Kannadigas.

Another traitor who has betrayed Dakshina Kannada district in matters related to Yettinahole diversion makes himself visible- Oscar.
All these people keep on talking and promising about arranging a meeting with the CM and conveying the concerns of the local DK people but on the ground, is it really happening? These statements come out only when there is some seminar or discussion or protest but after that, no progress as far as scrapping this unscientific project is concerned. At this rate by the time the CM is informed or any final decision is taken, the project will actually materialize and push Dakshina Kannada to its doom. At that time, another blame game will start! But does anyone, ruling or opposition really care? We, the common people will suffer the worst, the trailer was shown to us this summer!!

I personally feel that crying and hoo-haa from DK people against Yettinahole project is uncalled for. If they think that by diverting 7 TMC of rainwater from sakaleshpur to Bengalore, Nethravati river gets dry is a fallacy. First of this project is a waste of public money because there is no such water available to pump to bangalore. as per the project report they are only collecting that water during heavy rainy season, which otherwise flows to the Arabian sea, and pumping to bangalore, tumkur and Doddaballapur for drinking purposes. That much quantity of water can not be collected at the rainy season, rest of the year it is dry. Hence, only for 3 months in a year, that too if rain god bless them, they will get water but at what cost?
DK people need not worry because during rainy season near 100 TMC water per year is dumped to Arabian sea. If our agitators are fighting against environment destruction, then it is a different subject matter.
Drinking water problem of upper karnataka can be totally solved by collecting flood water of netravathi river and pumping it, by this way entire mangalore city will get free drinking water, more than 2000 hectares of nethravati river side will be irrigated for three crops. Govt should think in this direction to solve the problem of all parties concerned. Moreover this solution will also solve the interstate water disputes of tamilnadu and kerala also.

I do not know what this Oscar is going to do. All these years, he has done nothing for this region, I do not know from where he has cropped up. If he does something good for him and for all of us. I refer to a comment by one of the readers which says that all congress leaders have already taken their share. Yes, quite possible, but please do not be under the delusion that the BJP leaders are saints. They are also as corrupt and greedy as the Congress. They too would have already taken their share.

The best they can do is to continue these type of dramas till 2018 elections. The next BJP government will stop this project.
