Mangaluru: Complaint lodged over inhuman FB comment on Trasi tragedy

Yashodhara Bangera

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (RJP)

Mangaluru, Jun 23: A complaint stands lodged at Moodbidri police station against a person who allegedly posted an inhuman comment on a Christian community in Facebook relating to accident victims.

Christian leader Ashwin Pereira in a press meet called in Moodbidri revealed that a person named Shankar Prasad posted an inhuman comment relating to the deaths of small school going children who died in an accident at Trasi on Wednesday June 22. The comment red that “As all the children died are Christians, why should we worry about it?”. The comments were written in local Tulu language and reference to Christians was made with the word ‘Porbulnakulu’.

Pereira said if Shankar Prasad is not apprehended within 7 days, district-wide protest will be held. He said higher police officials in the district will be notified about the police complaint.

“Shankar Prasad is a black mark in society. When innocent children have died, issue of religion should not be brought into the matter. He has hurt the feelings of Christians. His approach is sadistic.” said Pereira.

Pereira demanded that Shankar Prasad should apologise for his comments.

“No one should be hurt like this. By taking stern action against Shankar Prasad, justice can be done to the families of the deceased. While the police have started the process of imposing the directives relating to safety of children, Moodbidri police are yet to do the same. Parents of children too should take enough precautions with regard to the safety.” Pereira added.

Manoj Alvares and Jerald Mendis were present in the press meet.

It is truly offensive of that man to comment in such a disgraceful manner where religion is put ahead over the death of innocent children. However aren't we too behaving like him by calling agitations, arrest etc. No doubt we have our own anger that's built, but aren't we the followers of Christ teachings?. If he could say "Forgive them Lord for they know not know what they are doing" with all the atrocities meted on him. Shouldn't we too say "Forgive him Lord for he Know not Know what he said or is saying" rather than making it an issue and gain unwanted mileage.

This facebook comment was made by a person with fake ID. Now it is also possible for someone with a fake ID to claim that the comment was actually made by a christian priest and many people will believe it too. This is similar to the Satyadarshini case when someone printed anti hindu material which led to the church attacks.

People should stop depending on facebook and whatsapp for information and consider it only for social connections. Almost all the information that comes on these mediums is fake.

By demanding his arrest we ourselves are promoting police raj. People should have the freedom to express. Yes however his comments are extremely insensitive, granted. We feel very bad. However demanding his arrest and venting our anger does not go well - we have to be tolerant. If we are intolerant then how are we different from right wing activists? Is it not the same parallel to some students making an error in judgement at JNU?

In society there are all sorts of people and the age of SELFIES promote NARCISSISM in our younger generation. It is this narcissism that makes people to be insensitive and show TOTAL LACK OF EMPATHY towards fellow human beings.

A lesson from this to all the parents is that teach the kids at young age to care for others, respect differences in religion, culture and tradition.

It does not matter whether children are Christians, Hindu, Muslim or any other religion. They are like angels who are innocent. Actual Shankar is :
Shankar Name Meaning. Indian (southern states): Hindu name from Sanskrit šankara 'one who brings about happiness or prosperity' (from Sanskrit šam 'happiness', 'prosperity' -kara 'causing'). This is an epithet of the god Shiva.

We cannot and should not restrict people expressing their thoughts. I do not agree with the view that this is a police matter and that the person should be arrested etc.

Surely his comment does not deserve media attention. If he made the comment so what? One cannot give importance to some negative comments as surely he is not supported by his close friends too .

It is equally wrong to have publicized this event as the original post.
By forwarding such posts - what do we achieve? However bad the comments sound- they are his personal thoughts.

All those are worked up - please note that all others who were part of 1)forwarding these comments,2) promoting the spread are more guilty of hurting the sentiments including mine.

What do we achieve by giving importance to one mans folly or biases . May be he had an error in judgement by posting his thoughts on facebook. What about people who spread these?

I strongly argue for not hyping this issue and if he has made an error in judgement - if he gives apology then accept it , forgive and move on.

Hate cannot be won by hate but forgiveness and acknowledging that people make mistakes.

Mahendra shetty, We do not spread hatred in the society nor do we encourage communalism, on the contrary we discourage communal devide & shun voilence. This press conference was to highlight that despite our docile nature , we are shunned , looked down upon, our religion is made fun of ( Roasting) etc. Why are we treated that badly. The press conference was to highlight the plight that we are in. Our places of worship were attacked on the pretex that someone had written some article about some hindu god , none of us were aware of this. The police too swiftly took sides , we were attacked without mercy , the old , weak & women were attacked very badly . they actually celebrated when the perpetrators of this crime were released & a heros welcome was accorded to them.

Sick minded People like Shankar Prasad are like a black mole in the society who sees religion even in the tragedy. he should be taught a proper lesson. Request Christan brothers not to call for Bandh for a fault of one idiot.

Children are Angels. They do not have any religion. No human in any religion will not enjoy with the death of Angels. People of all religion should come forward and condemn this sadistic act of Shankar Prasad.

The unwarranted comment only shows how nasty we human beings are within our minds. This could relate to religion, caste, sex, color, nationality and so on. The complaint may serve the purpose of having a deterrent on expressing such "seriously insensitive" remarks freely in public domain.

The comment made, although not very kind, does not warrant a threat of district-wide bundh.

If the person has unwittingly made an unkind remark, does everyone in the district have to suffer?

Just think of the many people who are daily wage earners, who will not be able to feed their family because of a bundh.

Many people post comments without thinking. But that does not mean the offended have to call for a district bundh.

What has happened to the spirit of forgiveness?

    Hi Mangalurian, Mangaluru,
In the article we can't see wth word bundh. Instead we can see only Protest. Please understand there is lot difference between bundh & Protest.
