International Day against drug abuse: Lobo calls to nurture old family values

Mangaluru, Jun 25: Akhila Karnataka Janajagruti Vedike DK and Udupi and the taluk's Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (R), Karnataka Rajya Madhyapana Sanyama Mandalu (R) Bengaluru, observed International Day against drug abuse at Town Hall here on Saturday, June 25.

After the inauguration, MLA J R Lobo said, "In these contemporary times, the entire world has become a global village. As technology, culture, knowledge and thoughts are exchanged from one part of the country to another, bad habits arise. This society has both, good habits and bad."

The MLA stressed on the importance of parenting that will keep the child away from drug menace and other bad habits. He said, "The family, parents, especially the mother play an important role in a child's psychological development. The mother has a major responsibility of raising the child with good conduct and behaviour. In earlier days, we used to live in a joint family system, but presently that concept has shattered giving rise to nuclear families. In a joint system there were elders at home who used to share the good and bad feelings of the children. This does not happen in the present day nuclear system. A child from a happy family will not easily be subjected to bad habits."

"The youth in search of pleasure and happiness get attracted to bad habits. Present day educational institutes are made easy targets of this drug mafia. The police department should take this seriously because this will ruin the future of the youth who are the nation's assets." Lobo added.

Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat vice president Kasturi Panja speaking on the occasion said, "The drugs mafia is a menace to society. In early days drugs were available in urban areas, but now they are sold in the rural areas as well. Society should be actively involved in preventing this menace. It is not just boys but even girls are victims of this mafia."

Mohammed Ismail, president of Akhila Karnataka Janajagruti Vedike DK welcomed everyone.

M R Rangashamaya, president of Karnataka Rajya Madhyapana Sanyama Mandalu (R) Bengaluru, Mahaveer Ajri, Baskar Gowda, Gopal Shetty Aribail and others were present.

    Appreciate all involved in this event. Our campuses slowly turning into drug den.
    Youngsters are easy targets. All parents should think seriously. Responsibility will not be over by mere admission of child to college but on day to day follow up and caution to see any changes in behavior.
    As the saying is "Educate a girl, family will be educated" but this will not be true if educated mothers skip their responsibilities while bringing up child.
    Narcotics in general cause severe impact on individual and a society as whole. There are 100%chances person commit crime with the influence of drug. Girls become easy prey for exploitation, and boys may turn into criminals.
    Final stage of addiction is like vegetative state, brain good for nothing. Causing drug addiction equivalent to killing.

    It is quite sad that despite of all the efforts, a section of the young generation as young as 14 or 15 is leaning towards the drug abuse. It is quite common to see these children in lonely areas such as abandoned compounds and areas, are a nuisance to senior citizens who are living nearby. Police are taking a lenient view. Drug paddlers are bold and confident enough against the law ! It is the senior citizens who should be scared of them! Most of the cases go unreported. Even today there was a case of disruption of peace in the area which I think will go unreported!

    Thank you so very much, Mr. J. R. Lobo for your kind and noble initiatives in creating a distinguished gathering with so many distinguished people, young and old, men and women, and create an awareness of the dangers confronting a Nation such as India by getting victimized with the deadly disease such as misuse of drugs that can virtually destroy the entire world. When some of our noble leaders in North America are propagating the creation of a 2500 mile long wall all across the borders, it is not the focus non illegal immigrants, but it is the illegal entry of billions of Dollars worth of illegal drugs that filter into a noble nation and virtually destroy thirty percent of the population of an exemplary and noble population. This is indeed criminal and explosive that can wipe out families, the communities, the towns, and also the prosperous cities.

    India is a noble nation with kind and peace loving people where the family values are deeply rooted in the mainstream of the nation. Whether we are rich or poor, fortunately we have been blessed with peace, harmony and stability in what we have done for the past seventy years of our Independence.

    Our Educational advancement, our Economic enhancement, our social and political enlightenment, and most importantly our cultural and religious entanglement - these are all positive factors that the world at large is watching carefully and admiring our strength that enables us to move forward day after day, one day at a time.

    India has been blessed with the finest people who believe in democratic values, secular virtues and most importantly our respect for each other and our focus on mutual co-existence. All of the above has been possible so far because we do not have the slightest addiction of drugs in spite of all the rest of the burdens.

    We therefore pray to God to give us the continued gift of a 'drug free' nation and that is the best gift for eradication of poverty and the rest of the dangers. May God help us.
