When Trasi tragedy was afflicted by social media disease...

Dr P V Bhandary, Psychiatrist

Udupi, Jun 27: There's a new disease that seems to be fast spreading, and I call it UUUT. It may not be deadly or even harmful to health literally, but it can have far-reaching impact if not controlled.

What is it? Nothing but spreading false rumours and false news via WhatsApp and Facebook.

The recent tragedy at Trasi in Kundapur where eight children died while travelling in an overloaded Omni, which collided with a speeding bus has caught all eyes. Unfortunately, when the whole world was mourning, we get a WhatsApp/Facebook message as follows:

"Kundapur. accident case-

Plz Plz Plz Plz Fwd this
Msg urgently.. atleast to
10 frnds.. I am also
forwarding.. A Baby
Needs AB-ve Blood
Immediately.Contact

9663228184
9542025814
9972669722

Don't Delete.......... Ur
Small SMS Will Sav a
Child"

And the whole of WhatsApp groups forwarded this to each other and a few good Samaritans called up the number which requested for blood. The host of numbers were all found to be hoax. A few of them were smart enough to call up the hospital, only to find that no blood was actually required.

That's not all. Within hours of the tragedy we saw people known to children travelling in the Omni sharing photos of the deceased, and later realising that one of the girls who was claimed as 'dead', was very much alive and recovering in a private hospital. Then we saw gory photos of dead bodies of these children shot as they were being rescued.

Now what is this new phenomenon? I see it as an unhealthy, unsafe use of technology - let me call it UUUT - A disease of the next generation. A disease to watch out for. It has a plethora of symptoms:

1) Spreading false news.
2) Defaming people whom you do not like.
3) Propagating one's narcissistic tendencies.
4) Obsession with 'selfie'.
5) Showing one's anger via statuses and display profile.
6) Blocking or de-friending people to show anger.
7) Getting intoxicated with online games or online chatting.

Today I shall write only on two symptoms - spreading false rumours and sharing false statuses.

What is the cause?

1) Genetic factors? Too early to comment as this UUUT as a disease has been noticed only recently. We need to examine the family history as we see kids coming to us with this disease.

2) Environmental factors:

a) Peer pressure - 'Friends do it, so I should not lag behind'
b) Model - All societal models do it, so we do it
c) Easy availability and accessibility of the tools - camera, social networks, cheaper internet packs

3) Personality factors: Impulsive nature, wanting to be centre of attention; being anti-social.

Effects of the disease

UUUT effects the sender as well as the reciever, as well as society. The sender gets into an obsessive phenomenon where he has to send messages or forwards, or has to share some status. He has the intense craving to share or forward a message. He feels restless if he is not able to do it, feels angry, irritable; his social functioning is restricted to 'virtual' society many a time. His occupational functioning becomes slow as he is into full time search for messages and statuses. In other words, he becomes a BEHAVIOURAL ADDICT.

And what about the reciever? He may not know what is true and what is false. He is confused as to whether to believe or disbelieve messages. Weak hearted people, aged or children may succumb to sudden shock.

Impact on society: Already enough 'rot' is spread by 'fringe' parts of media or media run by fundamentalist groups, and a lot of fear, anxiety is generated in society. To add to this, the UUUT spreads unnecessary confusion in society, creating havoc in the minds of the public, creating 'emergency' where there is no emergency.

Treatment

Any disease needs to be treated at the earliest to prevent it from becoming epidemic. Treatment is at the individual level as well as societiel level.

Individual level: The person should introspect and learn that 'technology' is a double-edged sword - safe, scientific use of technology is a must. If he is not able to do it, he may be suffering from a disease called BEHAVIOURAL ADDICTION. He needs to consult a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist who will advice medications or behaviour therapy.

Societal treatment: We need to complain to police, probably as a preventive strategy against such news. It is not difficult to trace the originator of such mischief. With the existing technological advancements and the existing cyber criminal laws, we can take care of such behaviours. Once it is effectively done it acts as a detterent.

Preventive measures:

1) Don't give cell phones to adolescents.
2) Limit use of cell phones ourselves.
3) Have an app which tells you the time spent on social networking sites.
4) Rational and critical thinking on topic before sharing it.
5) Self-imposed censoring before posting or writing on social media.
6) Self-binding ethics for social media like beneficence and nonmaleficence.

I end with a note that the construction, evolution and dissemination of this new disease that I have coined UUUT needs to be curbed, otherwise a day will come when technology surpasses humanity.

These type of information should be published again and again so that those people who dont know properly what they are doing at least to think about themselves before criticizing and defaming others. They might not be knowing that it is a sadist behaviour. We can see some of the unnecessary comments by some people who criticize even the good news and make it a political one. You can find such people in office also.

Many a times this craze of whatsapp etc also affects peoples working time. Why do people do it? I would say it gives pleasure doing all this. Self gratification. You have rightly coined the word : behavioral addiction.

What we need to do in order to use these apps in a responsible way?

1.Strictly keep the whatsapp/facebook that is for recreational purpose to a 30 minute period in the fixed time daily.

    2. Work related whatsapp : what would happen if we were to check it once a day or twice daily?

    3. Promise ourselves( pledge) that we will not forward any whatsapp without verifying the source or facts. Who was the original sender?

    4. Understand that these technologies promote self indulgence and narcisism in the younger generation. Teach our children empathy that is caring for others suffering in real world rather than via whatsapp forwards. Some people send spiritual nonsense via whatsapp. Others send medical nonsense( speculation, half truths, fear mongering, misleading posts).

I am surprised that all those who were the protectors of our " culture" from being threatened with western influences are silent on the damage these technologies causing to our vulnerable youth. Instead, misinformation, divisive politics and fear mongering is carried out using whatsapp.

Our younger generation is getting increasingly afflicted with drugs available through out Karnataka.Where are we heading ... in the name of modernity?

Dr. Bhandary , excellent article... please keep writing to alert us the dangers to our present society due to lifestyle changes associated with modernity.

Dr. Bhandary, Well said. It's the truth and undeniable.
Once when I was travelling to Mangalore in a bus, I happened to chat up the driver, a Friend. He mentioned an accident he had witnessed a few days prior. What he said was shocking.
All he said was people gathered around were clicking photographs on their mobiles rather than helping the victims. Before he could drive away messages come through social media sites.
It's a social disease which the person him/herself has to get rid of. People take pride in being the first to report syndrome.
    Thank you Dr. Bhandary.

As the technology advances these things are inevitable.Only education can solve this disease by educational articles like this.
Most importantly, we have to bring awareness about fake tele calls asking for credit card details which can destroy ones life. Banks issue credit cards to ignorant people without mentioning important points like " not to disclose CC /bank account details over the phone". It might be mentioned " do & don'ts" but nobody bothers to read and thieves take advantage of this.

This is one side of the Whatsapp and FB and social media users!. Then there is another dedicated group virtually funded by political parties and governments itself to manipulate the net and there fool people into believing that its true!. People today always check net for information and without verification if the facts believe it as gospel truth!. Need not say this trend was started by Modiji and even today its continuing!. They use their dedicated payed army of IT professionals to manipulate internet and that's it!. Today in these very columns you can see many bakhts referring to such fake sources and making tall claims about this government! But in reality they are just like their predecessors or even worse!. Recently they claimed that our Economy is growing at 7.9% but after experts questioned the claim,,they agreed there is mistake in calculation!. The second part was seen to it that it never became headlines!

Dear Doctor, thank you for the inspiring message. But people don't care,Specially the adolescents.Parents are afraid to correct their children.Because of fear of loosing them.See they dress up? No modesty...Some times back i myself have reminded a girl who had dressed very badly. At once she told me,when I am comfortable what it bothers you. They don't want to know what is right and what is wrong.Where is our dignity? How do we respect our parents and seniors? Are we ready to mortify ourselves? What right do we have cause pain to our neighbour?

Even as the children's bodies were kept for people for paying their last respects, it was horrifying to see many in the crowd taking their mobiles and recording it. Would they have been so insensitive if their own family members were involved?

Don't people even have a sense of propriety? In the developed countries pictures of dead bodies, funerals are hardly published. Even at the accident spot many were busy capturing the event on their mobiles as if it was a 'memorable' event that they should preserve for eternity! It is a mark of respect to the dead and also a sign of empathy with the relatives of the dead. In our media gory pics of dead bodies can be seen regularly.

Sadly the selfie culture has invaded funerals too and its high time our people begin to realize what they have actually become...
