Udupi, Jun 28: A garbage dump that has risen its ugly head by the roadside speaks volumes about the callous attitude of a hotel and recklessness of the city municipality here. The environment has been polluted, and unless the concerned take prompt action, lethal communicable diseases are sure to make the lives of the people here hellish.
This dump can be seen near Hotel Sharada International on national highway 66 a little away from Karavali Junction in the city. Garbage is being heaped at this unauthorized spot since the last several weeks with impunity and the concerned seem to draw encouragement from the lackadaisical attitude of the local administration.
A family of labourers has been living very near to this dump. Because of the slow-moving highway works, this family is entrenched here since the last several years in the middle of the highway. The family is exposed to the risk of suffering from dengue because of this unsightly and decomposing dump at their doorstep. The menace of stray dogs has also worsened on account of this dump, and these dogs which run around and pounce upon one another at will, have caused several accidents. One hopes that the concerned officials will take notice of this situation, take steps to remove this dump and ensure that garbage is not heaped in sites that are not meant for this purpose.
Hotel Sharada International, known to be one of the leading hotels in the city, has been accused of throwing its used liquor bottles, vegetables and other wastes into this garbage heap. The vehicles which pass by this spot and the family of the labourer stated above have been contributing to the worsening situation by pouring in their waste here.
One hopes that the city municipality here will come out of its slumber and do it duty of clearing the garbage and warning the concerned. The people in general and hotel staff in particular are also expected to understand their responsibility of trying to improve quality of air and environment rather than spoiling it.
