Mangaluru, Jun 28: Karnataka which was in the shadow of Kerala and Goa drug mafia so far is also being reached by dark foreign networks now. Foreign link is prominent in drugs trade. The demented youth in coastal region are importing drugs through hidden darknet search engine.
Students from outside the states and outside the country are in large number in Mangaluru and Manipal which is said to be Coastal education corridor. Drug mafias mostly target them initially and slowly attract local youth in the net. It has reached such dangerous proportions that parents are suspicious about their own children. However the parents are hesitating to knock at the door of the police.
It is known that drug mafia in the coast have made Konkan railway route between Kerala and Goa as their passport. However foreign darknet drugs link, beyond the earlier sources stepping in the coast, has created severe anxiety. The mafia that is not available in Google or any such search engines is functioning after installing separate browsing software termed darknet.
A parcel was received recently from Sweden which had an ordinary shuttle bat. As there was a picture of shuttle bat on the cover, it did not raise any suspicions. The fact that it had expensive drugs in it was found only after breaking the shuttle bat. The network is also spread in Pune and Mumbai also besides Udupi and Dakshina Kannada. Police higher officials who admitted that it is a major challenge to dismantle the network have said that they are in constant touch with Narcotics Control Board in this respect.
An eye on students
The students who are drug addicts are being sent home with a transfer certificate (TC). The parents are usually advised with the future of the children in mind to send them to rehabilitation centers without registering a police case. Police cases are registered and suitable police action is taken only when it is found that the children are involved in drug trafficking.
Ganja and opium get supplied to the coast from Goa, Hyderabad and Kolkata. The origin is being searched. Mangaluru police commissioner M Chandrashekar, district superintendent of police (SP) Bhushan Borase and Udupi SP Annamalai have expressed their determination that the coast will not be allowed to come in the grip of drug mafia.
