Sharjah, Jun 28: For the first time in the history of a Catholic Church in the UAE or may be even in the GCC countries, Iftar was held at St Michael’s Church Sharjah parish hall on June 22, where more than 500 poor labourers were given love, respect and Iftar.

In the presence of his Excellency Sheikh Salem, prayers were said and everyone was treated to a sumptuous meal. This is in line with what Pope Francis preaches to the world, “Go beyond your borders and reach out with Love’’. In the great Emirates, the rulers have always supported Christians and given the freedom to practice other religions.

A very dynamic Arab priest has joined St Michael’s church and this is his idea. He even went out of his way to motivate the youth and send them to traffic signals everyday at 6 pm to distribute dates and water to the motorists and when asked which group this was, they were amazed and happy that a Catholic Church is doing it.

Fr Maxim went about greeting the labourers, patting them on their backs and welcoming them with a big smile. No doubt the function was a big success with everyone going back with a sweet experience and a taste of Christian love.
