Puttur: Death of child at hospital - parents allege apathy, MLA intervenes

Puttur, Jun 29: After a seven-month-old child that was being treated at a private hospital here passed away, parents of the child alleged that negligence on the part of the doctors had caused this death.

Chaitanya, child of Padmanabh and Vidya couple from Kodapadavu Hosamane in Kolnadu village, Bantwal taluk, suffered from swelling of legs, vomitting and fever on Saturday last, it was admitted into a private hospital in the town. After Padmanabha alleged that medical negligence had caused the child's death, his relatives came together at the hospital and protested.

After she came to know about this incident, local MLA, Shakuntala Shetty, rushed to the hospital and held consultation with the hospital authorities and also the family of the deceased child. Her counselling appeared to have had a calming affect on the family.

Paediatrician of the hospital, Dr Srikanth Rao, explained that the hospital authorities had not erred in treating the child. He said that the child was admitted to hospital on Saturday with complaint of fever and vomitting, and that it had shown improvement in health condition after 48 hours of treatment. However, the health condition of the child suddenly deteriorated on Tuesday and it could not be saved, he added.

    Doctors treated the child for what problem!?. Symptomatic treatment is always dangerous especially in kids. It looks from doctors reply that they have treated the kid without carrying out detailed tests!

    personally feelo sorry for the parents who lost the baby. no words will solve their problems. RIP !

    that means you feel that proper tests to be done before diagnosisng & treating ...

    come on... it is always being critisised that doctors are doing all tests to make money & no one is making diagnosis with stethoscope & pulse reading...

    ultimatley, either way the doctor is wrong !!!!

    if tests are done, it is wrong, if tets are not done, it is offence...

    i feel there should be a protocol by district administration about what tests do be done for each of the complaint of both male & female patients of each age group. also it should be published in gazette, which doctor ( MBBS /MD/MS/ DIMPLOMA /FRCS/BAMS /UNANI/ SIDDHA/ NAATI VAIDYA...) can do what test & can give what medicine & can do what surgery...

    let everything be published how to do & what do do & what not to do.. for example in what situation malaria blood test to be done ? who can ask for MRI scan? what are the reasons for surgical removal of baby?

    let every one follow the gazette notification & if something goes wrong, let the gazette take responsibility...

    i am just thinking about rational answer for this frequent news of alleged medical negligence...

    let us have a clear gazette notification, i mean law.. not paper statement, we need to solve this problem of medical negligence with law. the law should tell what tests to be done & when & where...

    these days doctors charge a lot for treatment. This is accepted and paid by patients assuming they treated them and doctor is held responsible for the treatment and recovery. That's why it's paid. Now, when there is such an incident occurs where child recovers for 48 hours and all of sudden condition deteriorate, then it's again on the same doctor and hospital the ownership comes to. they are held responsible for the kid's sudden death.

    Doctor's statement itself is the proof for medical negligence.
    The doctor was only treating the symptoms and not the problem.

    How can a child whose condition improved with treat can suddenly deteriorate and die for no reason? There must a clear enauiry by the authorities Health officials and concerned pediatric specialists and then only take an action
