Mangaluru: Torrential rain disrupts normal life - rivers overflow

Mangaluru, Jun 30: Coastal area and Malnad regions have been getting torrential rain since the last two to three days. A number of areas have been flooded including Bhagamandala in Kodagu. Flood was reported in almost all the rivers in these areas including Thunga and Netravati, and inflow into major dams like KRS, Kabini, Bhadra and Linganamakki. Increased flow in river Thunga is threatening the bird sanctuary at Mandagadde, Shivamogga district.

Over 25 houses were damaged, and about 60 electric poles fell to the ground due to rain. Power supply to a number of rural belts got disrupted. Traffic blocks were reported from various places where roads and highways were blocked due to fallen trees and landslides.

As roads have been inundated, bridges have gone under water, and normal life has been disrupted in Kodagu district, a day's holiday has been declared for all the schools and colleges in the district on Thursday.

    This is common during the monsoon in coastal and malnad Karnataka for which mostly people are well exposed to face this casualty

    We need the rains badly as most of the dams and wells are dried up. Of course this heavy rains and winds have caused damage to properties which human beings have no control over. It is sad to see some houses flooded, trees fallen on roofs and some people with fancy umbrellas and so on and so forth. Thanks to Umesh Marpally of Daiji for the fantastic photo coverage. Even though we are far away, we can see what is happening due to this torrential rains and floods.

    There is an old saying IT POURS WHEN IT RAINS. The present rains are necessary and indeed serve as a relief. In places like Mangalore there was scarcity of water and because of the low levels of water in dams power supply too was adversely affected. With regard to any adverse effects, it is time that The Government takes contingent steps to safeguard against floods etc.

    Rain is welcome but torrential rain with heavy winds and water overflowing and low lying areas being inundated is a thing of worry and unsafe for the people living there.
    We used enjoy rain and used play during first rains. Those days the rain used to called Biri Biri rain. Sometimes used continue non-stop for weeks. Anyhow, enjoy cold weather and warm-up with some hot Pakode etc.

    How about another Mangalore Bandh or D.K Bandh against Yettinahole project ? Has any irrigation expert from D.K has studied the impact of Ettinahole on our water resources ? or Just opposing that project for political reasons?
    All the rivers of D.K are now overflowing just after 25 days of rain, so calculate the amount of water of these rivers that flow into sea and wasted till September end ?
    Why no one, including Mangalore City Corporation is now not talking about Rain-Water-Harvesting ?

    We are such country die without water and die with water. Its so bad we cannot harvest this water for the summer despite having such a good rain.

    After rains..coastal districts looks too beautiful. Should need eyes to view it and enjoy every moments. While looking happiness overflow from inside. After all it's creators creation is absent from many countries. We are lucky to have four seasons.

    Mr. Ramakrishna,
    I feel Yettinahole needs to be opposed until the ppl from the regions to which the water from Yettinahole project will be supplied to their bit to protect their water bodies. Let every home in those regions go for rain water harvesting. Let them do their bit to restore the ground water level in their region, let them restore the hundreds of lakes that they let the real estate guys encroach upon. If after all that they still do not have enough water then see what can be done. It is very easy for someone to be irresponsible about the nature around them and deplete the natural resources availble to them and then say "oh they seem to have surplus...lets take it from them" Eventually they will deplete this too and then look elsewhere...
