Bengaluru: Tejas, India's indigenous stealth fighter, inducted after 33-year delay

Updated

Bengaluru, Jul 1 (IANS): The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Friday inducted indigenously-built Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas that boosts its weakening operational capability, 33 years after the project to develop the multi-role stealth fighter was cleared.

The single-engine supersonic delta-wing aircraft is capable of carrying four tonnes of weapons and firing air-to-air missiles and precision-guided munitions like laser-guided bombs -- to attack enemy fighters and hit ground targets at a speed of more than 1,300 km per hour.

The aircraft developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) is fitted with Israeli multi-mode radar, the Elta 2032, which is suitable for air-to-air and air-to-surface modes. It is capable of lowering its radar signature that makes it harder to be detected early.

The aircraft is also equipped with a helmet-mounted display and has a distinctive 'glass cockpit' in which information is displayed real-time to the pilot.

In more ways than one, the fourth generation-plus advanced fly-by-wire Tejas is comparable to the French-built Mirage 2000 and is expected to replace the IAF's MIG squadrons being decommissioned from service. It is also considered far more advanced than the JF-17 fighter jointly built by China and Pakistan.

The induction of the fighter gives a major boost to the IAF's fighting capability.

The IAF’s fighter aircraft fleet of approximately 600 Russian, British and French jets is currently at only 33 squadrons, against its requirement of 45 in a case of a two-front war with Pakistan and China. The IAF has a sanctioned strength of 42 squadrons.

The IAF was earlier reluctant to have the Tejas in its fleet because the force had argued previously that after three decades of gestation period it would become obsolete by the time the aircraft entered the squadron service.

Officials said it was only after Prime Minister Narendra Modi intervened and promised a more powerful fighter to be developed indigenously in the near future that the IAF agreed to induct the first version of Tejas.

And on Friday when the jet finally made it into the IAF's 45 Squadron, the "Flying Daggers", air force officers cracked open coconuts as offerings to Hindu deities as priests held multi-faith ceremonies to mark the induction process with two planes.

Fire tenders in a military ritual sprayed water on the two jets as they rolled across the tarmac before the aircraft took off and manoeuvred within visual ranges under a cloudy Bengaluru sky and windy conditions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi expressed “unparalleled pride and happiness” over the induction.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, apparently keen on indigenisation of defence industry, said in a Twitter post that it was a “moment of national pride".

“Tejas will take our air strength to new heights,” wrote the Defence Minister.

To its credit, Tejas has had no accident in 3,000 sorties lasting over 2,000 hours of flying so far.

IAF test pilot and commanding officer of 'Flying Daggers 45' Group Captain Madhav Rangachari flew one of the multi-role aircraft for about 10 minutes from the Aircraft System Testing Establishment of the air force.

“I felt like being on top of the world when flying the Tejas fighter. It's an honour and a privilege to pilot the inaugural flight of the LCA soon after its induction," Rangachari told reporters.

The project to develop the indigenous fighter was first sanctioned in August 1983 and has cost so far Rs 55,000 crore.

Let us cheer at last we got a Light Combat Air Craft, that is Made in India. Forget about 30 % 50% 70% indigenous. My friends in their comments trying to politicise the achievement. Kindly do not do it. After all we are Indians first , then belongs to various Religions, finally few are leaning towards Congress, BJP, and few Left. But one thing is clear if US and other European Countries are making their own products, MNC's are doing it Recruiting Top rung Engineers from around the Globe, paying them handsomely. Indian Government PSU's import the complex components from other countries, but remember The Global manufacturers are importing Man Power from India. Let us not forget that India was under sanctions after the Nuclear fiasco, that prevented us from obtaining the latest Technology, even then we are doing wonders. Hence let us CHEER our Scientist and Engineers who had slogged and produced under poor conditions and petty Politics. Jai Hind !!!!

Well said Ex Sgt. George. Not every person can understand this achievement why it is great. Once a new born baby takes first step with the help of mother he/she runs for life time. Tejas is the first step of our talents and hard work of our great scientists. They will do wonders in the future. Please do not look in the eyes of politicians. We have to encourage, support and pray for our scientists.

    Subhash Chandra,

Air force requires aircrafts to fill specific roles. F-16 was designed as a Dogfighter and later modified into a multi-role fighter. So currently f-16 is classified as a multi role fighter. More apt comparison for F-16 would be rafale. India has already decided to acquire Rafale. So there is no point in purchasing F-16.

Tejas is a light combact aircraft. Its role it completely different to that of Rafale/F-16.

There is no point of comparing f-16 which pakistan has and Tejas. Because in a combat situation they mostly wouldnt face each other. Air superiority aircraft like SU-30 MKI will be sent in to neutralise any F-16 threats.

I wish to hold on to my praises for another year. Only time will tell how good the plane will be. meanwhile, I great beginning has been made DRDO should continue to improve and indigenise the components. I mean, the purpose of indenisation is to be self dependent in times of war and if the critical components like engine, avionics are imported, then there is nothing to be proud of. The aircraft frame is not high tech really.

Its rather sad to note that most of the components of LCA were imported. Even the engine is imported from the US. The engine - GE F 404, ejection seat from Martin Baker, missile from Israel and the multi-mode radar are among the prominent imported contents on board the Tejas now.

Only the control system and the airframe are indigenous.

They say it is far superior than the F16's, F18's, Tornado, Rafale and Su 35's. Then why worry. Israel may want to buy it later as a frontline aircraft. NATO may buy it too. Lets pray from now onwards for Tejas.

The LCA programme was started in 1980s by Indira Gandhi, to replace Mig 21s.
The name Teja was given by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, in 2003 for this programme.
It was still under testing for the last 12 years.
It took 33 years to get to the induction phase into service.
How long will it survive in service is a "Big Question????"

Unfortunately, HAL is not as competent as ISRO. They have never made a plane - either civil or defence - with indigeneous components like engines or weapon systems. The Kaveri engine which was supposed to be part of Tejas has disappeared from the radar. It is high time that we have a private aerospace company.

Some  defense minister wanted to cancel LCA Tejas Program, but the curse of the HAL, ADA and DRDO scientists ensured their government was thrown out...

The minister wanted MMRCA deal to go through worth 10 billion dollars, so that they can pocket the commission like they did in Augusta Westland deal..

Proud of HAL, DRRO and ADA for giving India the Gen 4 fighter aircraft. Pilots can feel proud while using this fighter machine

30% of the parts in Tejas are Imported from other countries and 70% is manufactured in India, now Imagine the job creation of made through 70% parts manufactured in India..

India does not have experience in manufacturing fighter jet Engines, however RR (Rolls Royce) has signed agreement with India to develop engines in India for AMCA and also for Tejas Mark 1 and this is transfer of technology..

We have to see how long these will fly and be in service.
Even China is making a plane C300 in competition with Airbus and Boeing, but not even Chinese Airlines buying those for fear of passenger safety.
It is flying which is not similar driving on ground.
Only one way is possible of two things, up or down.
