Udupi: Two-day jackfruit fest attracts farmers, visitors in large numbers

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (HB)

Udupi, Jul 1: The two-day state-level jackfruit festival was off to a splendid start on Friday, July 1 with a large number of people flocking the venue.

The jackfruit festival has been jointly organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra Brahmavar, Shree Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project, Kundapur, horticulture and forest department, Udupi, and other organisations at Rajangana hall of Shree Krishna Math here.

The festival was inaugurated by Sri Vishweshateertha Swamiji in the presence of Sri Vishwaprasannateertha Swamiji and district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj.

The visitors enjoyed the delicious tastes of a variety of jackfruit dishes.

Speaking to daijiworld, Veronica Cornelio, chairman of Karnataka Soap and Detergents Limited said, "There are different varieties of jackfruit products. I have never seen so many varieties of jackfruit. Jackfruit tea powder is also available, which I did not know. I had the opportunity to taste different varieties of dishes. This is the best season for sale of such products. Earlier, I had seen many of these varieties only on WhatsApp."

Hanumanthappa, assistant research director said, "Farmers have arrived for the fest from faraway places such as Chikkaballapur, Sakrebailu, Belagavi and Doddaballapur. We are getting good response from the public and hope to see a good sale."

Jackfruit seller Ravikumar from Chikkaballapur said, "I brought three tons of five to six different varieties of jackfruits from my place. I am happy with the business here. We have an organization of 140 members at Thopakere village. The group was started in 2009. It is truly a profitable and cost effective crop.

"In the beginning, our profit was Rs 4 lac and now we are earning upto Rs 28 lac. Nearly 3,500 varieties of jackfruit trees are planted in Thopakere village," he added.

Farmers have put up stalls to sell items such as jackfruit chips, jackfruit raw chips, jackfruit chips powder, sweet and spicy papad and much more. Some of them offered free slices of jackfruit to people. Many varieties of jackfruits such as red Rudrakshi, Chandra, Rkadashi etc have been displayed in the fruit fest.

Approximately 20 to 25 stalls have been set up. Farmers, self-help groups and farmers’ association members are actively participating in the festival.

'Adike' magazine editor Shree Padre held an hour-long session on 'Speciality of jackfruit in Karnataka and scope for farmers'.

During my younger days we had a particular jackfruit tree at my place which was in great demand from all my neighbours sons and daughters working in Mumbai and abroad for the fruits. It was that much tasty and delicious .We were forced to eat fruits from other jackfruit trees only.I still remember the tasty gariyos prepared by mom.In the rainy season we used to eat the Bole upkarry made by mom from the seeds of jackfruit preserved from the summer season. And what to tell about the felakai gatti made from the ripe friut by grinding it with rice and baked wrapping with thandadeche leaves. It was really mouth watering. When it was raining heavily mom uesd to fry those jackfruit papads in coconut oil.I still cherish those childhood memories .

In our childhood days we used to eat plenty Jackfruits including other items like Patholi, bhaje etc. made out it. we parents, brothers sisters and others sit together and finish off the entire jackfruit and enjoyed. While eating there will be lot of fun.But the present generation dont like to eat this fruit. They are very much interested to eat Pizza, and other fast foods. Due to this our jackfruits are being wasted without its consumption. Our children should eat jackfruit considering its contents.

While I agree with your suggestion, i have a concern about this. Even saplings distributed to children, where will they plant them. currently most of them live small 3 cent to 5 cents land, other live in apartments. It would have been better if children are take to forest range to plant these trees, it would serve two purpose - 1st Children will have outing, 2nd Trees planted in the land meant for forest will survive. Otherwise, you might have seen that, saplings planted both sides of road are cut by someone as they obstruct someone, may be blocking someones gate, growing directly under the MESCOM electric wires which are threat for general public and also cause short circuit, some die during summer due to extreme temperature.

Happy to see the display of jackfruits. Surprised to learn that there are 3500 varieties of jackfruits since I know only 10 varieties. (Kaapo, Rosal, Edebarko, Meetak galso, guzzo-ranso, Biknaro ... etc.). It is rich in taste and cheap in price compared to other fruits. I still remember the taste of Guzzo when my mother used to prepare. Wah, it was delicious. Even the seeds too.

I agree. We get here tinned products from Thailand and Sri lanka in terms of jackfruits, tender jackfruits for cooking, jackfruit seeds, coconut juice, coconut milk, tender coconut bits etc. I think we in coastal Karnataka have a long way to go to do the same which will certainly help the farmers.
