Mangaluru, Jul 2: "The proposed implementation of uniform civil code in the country is part of BJP's vote bank politics as five state assembly elections are nearing," said Janardhan Poojary, former union minister and Congress leader in a press meet at the district Congress office, here on Saturday July 2.

"Implementation of uniform civil code in our country is not possible because we have many religions and thousands of castes. Every religion has its unique tradition and rituals. In this context, how can one impose uniform rules and regulations to all? People of one religion cannot compel the people of other religion to follow their rules. The BJP-led government is trying to divide the country and gain votes,” Poojary said.

“During the time of framing the Constitution, the drafting committee was aware that this situation could arise in the future and hence nowhere has there been a mention of the uniform civil code. Even union law minister D V Sadananda Gowda has said that more time is required to discuss the uniform civil code.

"Deciding about a religion's tradition is the duty of the leaders of that religion. If a few people have issues with 'Talaq' (divorce) and other matters, they must discuss it with their religious leaders. If the religious leaders after holding the discussion urge the government for a change of rules, then let the government do it. Let them not impose the rules on anybody. Otherwise the proposed step by the government will destroy not only harmony in the country but also our unity in diversity," Poojary opined.

Malegaon blasts

Poojary alleged that the union government was trying to protect Sadhvi Pragya Thakur and was supporting the right-wing organizations to help her get acquitted in the Malegaon blasts case.

“Even the magistrate court and the high court concerned have pointed out that there is sufficient evidence to get her convicted and hence have denied her bail. People are trying get her acquitted in the case like they helped five others. The union government must not support this," he said.

On Siddaramaiah's leadership

Asked about attempts by a few Congress leaders to bring down chief minister Siddaramaiah, Poojary said, "He must continue as the chief minister for 10-15 years as he has implemented many projects for the poor.

"If change is inevitable, which leader in the state Congress has the dedication and commitment that Siddaramaiah has?" he questioned.

'No suitcase culture in the state Congress'

When asked about the allegations that 'suitcase culture' has crept into the state government, he said that he has worked with Digvijay Singh in AICC. "I know how he works and what his ethics are. Suitcase will come nowhere close to him," he asserted.

Asked about the demand by the Billava leaders for the ministerial post, he said that demanding power and facilities are their right. "The high command will decide on that," he said.

Regarding allegations that Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes had a hand in dropping Sorake from the cabinet, Poojary said that it was not true.

Former mayor of MCC Mahabala Maarla, former deputy mayor Purushottham Chitrapur, leaders Kallige Tharanatha Shetty, T K Sudhir and others were present.

BJP will not implement UCC...Modi is just eyeing UP elections....before May 2014 Modi was against Article 370 and promised to abolish it once coming to power....We all know Modi's U-turn regarding Black money, Aadhar Card, GST, Nuclear deal etc etc....Muslim votes in UP will be divided by SP, BSP and COngress. Modi is eyeing the majority votes. UCC is just a political move eyeing UP election.

Uniform Civil Code in India will not affect Christians in India, because all the practices are in line with international practices.
Muslims will definitely have problems because they will have to shed their age old, man dominated rules of life. They will have to let go off the tripple Talaq and polygamy.
Hindus will be deprived of the tax rebates for Undivided Hindu Families. And Shetty's Aliyakattu too will have to go, coz UCC gives equal rights of parental properties for both sons and daughters.

Let us welcome it, for a appeasement free politics and a harmoneous society.

I think common civil code is a must. But intentionally political leaders create confusion.

Best way to move forward is to propose and implement a 3 step change. If India has cast system common civil code may not affect the reservation. In developed countries there are affirmative actions- a name given to reservations for racial minorities.

I do not find logic in Poojary statements.

Irrfan Khan is in news for trying to initiate discussions on medieval practices like animal sacrifices . "The meaning of qurbani (religious practice of sacrificing animals) is to sacrifice something which is close to you instead of any goat or sheep which you just buy to sacrifice," Khan told the Deccan Herald.

Those who believe in caste system will never understand equality. And you people are preaching equality through UCC?
Provide equal rights to your lower caste brothers of your own community.

A uniform civil code would mean that all have to follow Manushastra. Untouchability will continue. Devadasi system will carry on. Brahminism will triump. There won't be beef but humans will be massacred in the name of caste and religion. It will be not Hinduism but Hindutva.

I dont know if you know the meaning and purpose of uniform civil code? Or you just want to vent your anger at certain caste and community with a prepared comment?
There are fake liberals in india whose job is to predict dooms day and instill fear in the minds of minorities and dalits. Good for India that the social media exposes these fake liberals day in and day out that they are fast becoming irrelevant.

Mr. Poojary, Uniform Civil code is the Constitutional requirement as per article 44. And honourable Supreme court is asking the Govnmt to implement this to bring justice when human rights are violated in the name of religion. Infamous Shah Bano Case is the good example to bring Uniform civil code. Rajiv Gandhi played vote bank politics in Shah Bano case and snatched her right of getting 200 rs as maintenance as per Supreme court Judgement.

    Dear Jannana
UCC will not enter rituals or bedroom. Please don't try to fool and brainwash your vote bank. UCC is more towards the same constitutional rights to all, benefits from the Govt and equal policies.

Modi Govt will not set any particular law on how many rounds "Arathi" to make in Rangapooje, or how many times ring the bell in church or temple or the length & decibels of the Azaan or How to marry, and how to behave in the first night or check the bed sheet next day to check if the BRide was virgin indeed. Mainly we want case based reservations to go and only economy based reservations to stay irrespective of caste.

    Mr. Janaradhana Poojary.

Uniform Civil Code is possible. We do agree in India is a land of multi cultural, multi ethnic and many religion.

But with the name of religion, the down trodden, weaker section people, women have been exploited.

Uniform civil code will make things easier for all of us. How and when, the Uniform Civil code should start can be reached with consenses.

    Mr.D' Cunna,
For Uniform civil code India need strong, Time bound, well trained, educated, Financially sound, resourceful, Independent from Politics, Religion, Cast, Fundamentalists like RSS Justice system. See the burden on current non functioning court system in India. It is impossible to free India from the mess of cast, religion and age old traditions and it is best to empower minorities and Dalits to take care of their own legal/culture/tradition system with out the creating more mess in non functioning current Administrative & Justice system.
