Udupi, Jul 6: Sea erosion continues to be life threatening during the monsoon at Malpe beach. In a bid to protect locals from the raging sea, the officials are finally erecting temporary wall with boulders.

Recently, the laid interlocks were washed away due to constant sea erosion. The current tide table reports a 1.65 metre height wave appearing.

Finally, district authority and beach committee are taking up things seriously and erecting a temporary wall to prevent sea erosion. The work is in full swing. The officials are putting massive boulders at shore.

Many coconut trees have been uprooted due to continuous rain. Huge waves have damaged bridge which connects Odabandeshwara.

According to the CMC engineer Jagadish Bhat, “Nearly 150-200 meters of long sea wall was washed away. It is really a challenge for us to keep the protecting wall as well as save the lives of residents. Every year, the same problem is reported during monsoon.”

Speaking to Daijiworld, port engineer PS Rathod said, “Considering the emergency-like situation, we are building temporary stone wall to prevent public life. Last year, we had constructed wall near Hanuman Bhajana Mandira and Furtado Guest House. This year the intensity of wave is too high and it was unpredictable.”

Recently Daijiworld had reported the plight of sea erosion. As a result of this, Tahsildar of Udupi instructed the concerned department to take immediate action.

The government needs to find permanent solution. otherwise it would endanger the lives of residents as well as tourists near Malpe beach.

If they spend money on barriers like we see in these pictures - it makes us to believe authorities just build and rebuild such walls every year and pocket money as much as possible. Those are compound walls..!!
Is that the kind of barrier against the angry sea?
Is there no responsibility at all?
This subject comes ONLY when rains starts and stops before the rains stop...!!! Throughout the remaining months nothing is talked about or being done.
So many times many people have suggested most effective barrier with tetra pods. Why they are not trying with those which are used world wide where there is erosion.
Even that I doubt they will do a good job as the cement etc. that is used may be of very low class and the tetra pods will collapse within first month of facing the waves!!!
God save our India from these corrupt officials.
Why God does not punish these corrupt people immediately?

When I took my European friend around the DK coastal road he asked me which area are the resorts and star beach resorts??? I told him it will be built in future....many pockets need to overflow prior to that!!!

When other countries have developed the capability of building artificial islands (e.g. China) and the UAE is planning to create artificial mountains, it would surely be possible for Indian scientists/architects (who are among the best in the world) to find a permanent solution to this very old problem.

All that is needed is a strong leadership, a strong will and quick action. Even spending in crores for a team of experts to go abroad in search of the right solution, would be worth every Rupee spent, for protecting the precious lives and property of our hard-working fisherfolks.

We open eyes only when the treat is at the door step. We simply sleep over other times. When many countries are recovering lands from sea, we are loosing our land to sea. Lots of pressure required to make policy makers realise this and do something really that matters.
