Mangalore, Nov 16: The anchor-handling tug which was summoned from the UAE carried out mock salvage operations before starting the actual salvage operations on Friday November 16.
The anchor-handling tug which was brought from UAE, reached near the sunken ship ‘DenDen’ at Tannirbavi beach on Thursday.
The tug has been brought to pump out the furnace oil and fuel from the cargo hold of freighter vessel ‘DenDen’, which sunk on Saturday June 23 by Tannirbavi shores.
The local fishermen expressed concern over the sunken ship, owing to the issues related to the environmental pollution. They feared that, the ship would prove hazardous, if it is not handled properly. Hence, Holland-based salvage team which arrived from ‘Switzer Salvage Pte Ltd’ is doing its best to avoid any leakage of liquid cargo, during pumping-out operation.
The salvage team has already completed the survey of the sunken ship as preliminary for the pumping out operation, in order to identify the points through which the oil could be pumped out to the nearby anchored tug boat.
Now the question lies in how safe the ‘Svitzer’ team would handle the pumping out operation. The ship which sunk about 5 months ago, has retained interest among the neighbouring residents especially fishermen living across the sea shore, mainly because of environmental concern. Hence, the salvage team is taking extreme care in this regard.
The New Mangalore Port Trust officials are monitoring the operations while cooperating with the teams that have arrived from foreign countries.
