Udupi: Byre Gowda urges farmers to opt for mechanized paddy cultivation

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Jul 10: "Due to various reasons, paddy cultivation, which is prominent especially in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, is declining. To make it profitable, we need to give importance to mechanized cultivation," said Krishna Byre Gowda, state minister for agriculture.

He was speaking after inaugurating a mechanized paddy cultivation campaign at Agrahara village in Bramavar here on Sunday July 10.

"Farmers should be educated on mechanized paddy cultivation in order to make it profitable. Paddy is not only a food grain but also part of our culture. We need to revive paddy cultivation. From past two years, continuous efforts are being made through the agriculture department to increase the paddy production and reduced the expenses. But scarcity of labour and increased wages have hindered farmers from taking up paddy cultivation. With mechanized farming, expense for the entire entire process of cultivation would be only Rs 4,000 per acre, but with manual labour, the cost will come up to Rs 8,000 per acre," he said.

"Machinery for paddy cultivation will be available for rent in Krishi Dhare centres. In the district, there are 7 such agricultural machine centres at present, and if there is demand from the farmers, more centres will be established. Subsidy will also be provided for interested farmers. Farmers are availing benefits through the online market facilities. The government is giving importance to all systems that benefit the farmers," he added.

The minister also suggested the farmers to use alternatives for chemical fertilizers, and to set up nurseries with the help of Sthree Shakti groups and introduce mechanized farming system. "Brahmavar Agriculture Centre and the agricultural department will give necessary information to the farmers," he added.

After releasing a CD on mechanized paddy cultivation, MP Shobha Karandlaje gave information about pesticides and use of fertilizers. Minister Pramod Madhwaraj presided over the programme.

ZP president Dinakar Babu released a technical hand book on agriculture. MLC Pratapchandra Shetty, ZP vice-president Sheela K Shetty, taluk panchayat president Nalini Pradeep, agriculture and industry standing committe president Shashikanth Padubidri and gram panchayat president Saraswathi were present. Dr C Vasudevappa of University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences presented the keynote address while Dr M K Nayak welcomed and M Hanumathappa thanked.

Raita Samparka Kendra inaugurated

Byre Gowda also inaugurated Raita Samparka Kendra the same day.

Addressing the gathering, he said, "Raita Samparka Kendra will solve the problems related to communicating complaints to the agriculture department. Through the Raita Samparka Kendra, agriculture and horticulture experts will be available for farmers. It is a system to communicate directly with farmers.

"Ever since I assumed office, 300 such centres have been established in the state. The agriculture department has been directed not to restrict itself only to distribute agriculture equipment but also give importance to technology and ensure it reaches the farmers.

Pramod Madhwaraj who presided over the programme explained about the government's vision for agriculture and importance of farmers in the production of food.

ZP president Dinakar Babu released a technical hand book on agriculture. Lots of land not used or left idle to grow anything in DK and Udupi Dists. Shortage of labour, have to spend more than the returns it gives, or people working in gulf countries not interested in growing. A place where plenty of rain happens, is allowed to waste. The trend should change, growing anything must be profitable and such profitable crop should be found. Otherwise one day we will buy food grains from gulf countries along with petrol.

Paddy agriculture is almost closing situation only due to labor problem in DK.olden days some ladies was interested in this now no one due to beedi easy work.. only from north karnataka bijapur people are available but cost is not working out,
now minister has given some hope introducing machines will work out some extent.
technology must come into help to our farmers, rather than minister officials must take more interest in coming days.

The minister is worked in US for several years ... good.
But USA procedures cannot use here. In USA percapta income is around 50,000 dollars.
in india percapta income only 300-600 dollars. and there are people living with 50 dollars per month.
What will be the petrol or diesel consumption for the se machine's. what is the cost of the machine's.
Is government is giving subsidy to buy mechine's.
what is the fertilizer cost which are using such type of agriculture.
Is it affordable to small farmers those who are having 2to 3 acers of land.
Because in DK 90 percent farmers are having less than 5 acers of land and the out -come from that is not sufficient for them. they have to go outside for labour.
what is the rice cost per quintal. How much quintal rice is coming per acers. Is it enough to maintain these type of machine's.
These machine's useful only if government giving subsidy in buying the machines and subsidy should be given to buy petrol or diesel and fertilizer. and there should reasonable rate for rice.
The present rice price paddy farmer's cannot survive.

i could see on the board displayed date of sow is 2nd july. today is 10th. within 8 days the paddy plants are grown so fast. what they are using? a few months back kuwaiti govt. banned to import green chillies from india, for they are grown and exported within short period which is not acceptable as they are using fast growing chemicals/fertilizers whatever u call it,which will slowly damage human health. please dont use modern fertilizers. only use cow dung and chicken fertilizers.
    thanks and good luck

It is a good idea for farmers to go for mechanized paddy cultivation. Most of the countries are using this and it saves time and the produce is more.

I completely agree that mechanical way of cultivation is economical, efficient and time saving. But as rightly said many would loose jobs mostly poor.

Also it is very important that the authorities to train, guide and conduct symposiums for our farmers to get the required training and knowledge of new techniques. At the same time we need to ensure that job looser from these new technologies will get alternative jobs for their living.

Half of the Paddy cultivation was spoilt because of your then Land reforms Act, and the remaining also spoiled because of your freebies to vote bank.

To encourage Agriculture First stop the 1Rs per Kilo Rice. Your Govt has made 90% people Lazy because of this freebies.
