Mangaluru: Balmatta-Bendoorwell road to be named after Blasius D'Souza on Jul 16

Mangaluru, Jul 13: "The road from Canara Bank circle, Balmatta to Karavali circle in Bendoorwell will be named 'Blasius M D'Souza Road' in a programme to be held on July 16," said MLA J R Lobo.

Addressing a press meet at the district Congress office here on Wednesday July 13, J R Lobo said, "For so many years we have tried to achieve this, but due to several reasons the naming was delayed. We had put forth this request to former urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and now the official orders have come. I thank the MCC for making this happen.

"Blasius M D'Souza served as the district president of Congress committee in Dakshina Kannada for several years. He was Mangaluru city council member and later became council president. He was the state legislative council member and also served as labour and law minister. He was one of the most successful men born in Mangaluru.

"Taking note of his work and dedication to society, the state government has decided to honour him by naming the road from Balmatta Canara Bank circle to Karavali circle at Bendoorwell after him. By this we want to send a clear message that those who work for the betterment of the people will not be forgotten," Lobo said.

"Post this programme, south block Congress party workers' convention will be held in Town Hall the same day, where the 125th birth anniversary of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar will also be observed. Opposition leader of Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge will inaugurate while dignitaries like home minister Dr G Parameshwar, member of parliament Oscar Fernandes, M Veerappa Moily, former union minister B Janardhan Poojary, KPCC working president Dinesh Gundurao, ministers U T Khader, D K Shivkumar, Legislative Council chief whip Ivan D'Souza and many other dignitaries will be present. District in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai will preside over the programme."

"Officials are bound to have pressure from politicians"

On being asked about DySP Ganapati suicide case, Lobo said, "No one should commit suicide, be it an official, farmer or any common man. Executive, legislature and judiciary are interconnected. In order for the work to be done, officials are bound to have pressure from politicians, who in turn face pressure from the public. If a senior official asks his subordinate to perform a job and the subordinate feels it is 'pressure' from the administration, it is his personal view. So just because of a statement, trial cannot be done. An inquiry will be conducted and only then the truth will come out. Trial without investigation is not right. CID is alreay investigating the case and the truth will come out.

"If you closely observe the interview given by Ganapati, he has given answers to the questions asked by the anchor. It cannot be considered as a dying declaration and there was a time gap between the suicide and the interview, hence drawing conclusions before investigation is not right. Being an official, talking against the government is against the code, he cannot do so while in service. If K J George had anything against him then why would Ganapati be given charge of Rajgopal Nagar station where so many officials want to be posted," he questioned.

BJP, JD(S) politicising DySP Ganapati's suicide: Congress

Interim district Congress president Ibrahim Kodijal on Wednesday July 13 attacked the opposition BJP and JD(S) and alleged that they are politicising the suicide of DySP Ganapati.

Addressing a press meet at the district Congress office here, Ibrahim said, "The opposition BJP and JD(S) are politicising the DySP Ganapati suicide case and have stalled the monsoon session for the past two days. Ganapati's father in a complaint has claerly stated that his son was suffering from depression and to certify this, there is evidence that he had consulted a doctor here in Mangaluru.

"Why did the BJP not protest over the suicide of DySP Kallappa Handibag? It is clear that there is a political motive behind the protest over Ganapati's case," he alleged.

"Ever since Yeddyurappa became the state president of BJP, he is dreaming of becoming the chief minister in the upcoming elections. The Siddaramaiah-led state government is doing a good job and we will come to power again. Siddaramaiah is one of the best chief ministers after Devaraj Urs. He has fulfilled 80 percent of the promises made in the manifesto," he added.

Asked why FIR had not been registered against minister K J George and the two officers named by Ganapati on the day of the suicide, Kodijal said, "The government has handed over the case to the CID and once the preliminary reports come, the truth will emerge."

Naming after someone is not wrong, but changing it again and again makes no sense. However their are many people in mangalore who has contributed a lot but they are not into picture so naming someone just like dat is not right, it is like letting those down who are equally worth of it. so it's better not to change n be the way it is.

In this regard what has Late Blasius Dsouza actually done for Mangalore city or for that matter for Kankanady - Hampankatta residents / business establishments ?? Can the Congressmen or J.R.Lobo state Blazys achievements ? Blazy was called "Lazy" by the same congressmen those days.

In the year 1959 when I joined St. Aloysius College there was an election for various posts in the College Union. During maths class, when in PUC, professor Rasquinha was teaching us maths. Blasius suddenly lighted up and gave us a speech and I could not understand a thing of what he spoke, it was fast and furious? But I felt, he spoke very well and after Blasius left Prof. Rasquinha said, “It was a very good speech”, and I also said, “Yes sir, it is a very good speech”, for it sounded very good to me though I picked not a word from what he spoke as I came from an obscure school with little or no knowledge of English. Prof. Rasquinha further said, “He will be a future leader”, and leader he was as he did well for himself and the rest by being a Law Minister and putting forth a clean image. I often spied him commuting on a cycle, then a moped and after many years when I left Mlore, I heard him to be a Law Minister. Now Blasius has done well for himself and served well in the field of politics displaying a clean image and leadership, so why not make him a piece of good example for all as the man has shown the way to go that many a young man now wants to do.
Name the road after him and be done with it without any further hullabaloo and all that typical “thu-thu me-me”?

Naming Balmatta - Bendurwell road as Blasius M. D Souza road should have been done earlier than this considering his service as Congress Leader as well as Mr. Clean image. But better late than never. We all feel proud and happy to know about this But dont change this name and gradually change it as Balmatta - Bendur road. It reminds me about S.L.LOBO ROAD (from Rly. station upto Nandigudda) He was also active congress man and served as Corporator about 45 to 50 years ago. But now it is called as N.G.Road (Nandigudda Road) and throughout instead of S.L.Lobo Road allllllllllllllllllllll the shops etc boards are exhibited as N.G.Road. Whether it is correct? Who has allowed to do this mischief. Those who are sitting in photos have to take action to rectify this grave mistake.

Naming prominent roads, howsoever short or long roads, in honor of many deserving local leaders, dead or alive, has lot of value and meaning for many others to realize and appreciate the legacy created so that the names can remain as a lasting tribute.

Naming the Balmatta-Bendorewell Road in honor of late Blassius D'Souza is extremely praiseworthy, and people such as Mr. J. R. Lobo need be complemented for being instrumental in creating such noteworthy monuments in the society that we live.

We know Mr.Blasius D'Souza as well as the entire family of Mr. A. R. D'Souza who have done so much for our Christian community in Mangalore. Creation of a good name for decades in Mangalore requires tremendous efforts and sacrifices, and their names after the prominent rods in Mangalore will be a great reminder for all of us to know that somebody has been working hard to make these good things happen.

We have another desire in our heart that we are keen that people such as Mr. J. r. Lobo as well as Mr. Ivan D'Souza should follow, and that is the name of late Mr. Wilfy Rebimbos to be enlisted for the Kankanady-Jeppoo route that will enable people to realize the contributions made by Wilfy Rebimbos towards Konkany Music for decades that has upheld the values for Konkany language.

Naming the roads or junctions after the deserving people are some of the best tokens of appreciation that will create landmarks of the contributions made by individuals who have given their very best to the society that we all belong. Let us therefore open our minds and hearts with a selfless attitude and devote our focus on many of our societal pillars who have given so much to our community during their life time. "Namaskhaar"

Before naming the Roads Please stop the Illegal Buildings & MCC too is entertaining and encouraging the builders to build commercial complex and allot parking in roadside which is meant for footpaths and vehicle movement ,Forget about old construction built 20 yrs Back but ,the new Buildings coming up (already finished) in Blaisy House Area has violated all the rule the Structure doesn't have a proper Basement Parking ,and the people, staffs ,customer related to that commercial complex usually park in streets that too in Citys most traffic jam Area. Dear MLA Please stop these Name giving Ceremony & make all possibility ,look around Mangalore how many new commercial & Residential buildings are encroaching the public area ,Footpaths ,Roads.Especially the stretch from Balmatta to Kankanady Byepass ,than if you get Time Sure attend all these Functions.

I don't know if to laugh or cry .
If you see the condition of the road near Late Mr. Blasius D'Souza's house(Bendoor well Junction)even he will not accept to use his name to the road.
Stop cosmetic developments, start constructive development.
