Mangaluru, Jul 16: The Airports Authority of India has given its nod for the proposal to extend the parallel taxiway at the international airport here. This extension will cost around Rs 106 crore.
The construction of the first phase of the additional taxiway here had begun two years back. This taxiway is 1,200 metres long and 23 metres wide. This taxiway is under construction and will be completed in about two months from now.
The first phase of the work will cost Rs 40 crore, it is estimated. For the second phase, a 35-metre-deep gorge needs to be filled. The work on the second phase is likely to begin in January next year and completion is expected by the end of next year. The total length of new runway will be 2,400 metres.

Director of the airport, J T Radhakrishna, said that with the additional taxiway, aircrafts will be able to save time in the time required to reaching to and from the runway to their respective gates. He said that at present, each aircraft is required to wait for ten to fifteen minutes. At present, the airport handles 48 flights (24 incoming, 24 outgoing) per day, he added.
