Mangaluru: Sea water processing plant for city under consideration

Mangaluru, Jul 22: State urban development minister, Roshan Baig, said that the government is considering the desirability of installing sea water purification plant at Mangaluru to convert saline water into drinking water on the lines of Chennai. He was speaking to press persons at Bengaluru on Thursday July 21.

"In Chennai, sea water is being purified with private participation and supplied for meeting drinking water requirement. Recently, a meeting with the officials there was held and the process was studied. Now we are considering the option of emulating this model in Mangaluru," he stated.

Baig noted that the Tamil Nadu government is not burdened with the cost of operating this project as it has been undertaken with private participation. He stated that the charges collected from people is being remitted to the company. He added that the government will install such units and collect opinions from the people, and if it is found to be successful, more such units will be installed in course of time.

    Our ground water reserve is going down y-o-y, due to various reasons mainly because of many borewells,interlocks,construction of new buildings,water supply to MRPL etc.existing spring water ponds are closed and new houses are constructed over these lakes,ponds. Everyone knew the Desalination plant is expensive but how to solve water scarcity. We can save/stop river water flowing to sea at certain level, but not beyond that.Constructing a dam means many villages of vicinity/low level areas will go under the water, all these problems already addressed/discussed in length over many years by experts and there is no chance. Only alternative to go for Desalination plant to meet the water crisis

    This is one of the weird proposal to come across from our Minsters. Desalination of water is done where there is NO RAIN like Gulf countries.It is very very expensive process and has huge environmental implications with damage to Marine habitat
    Our Ministers forget that we are WASTING precious rain water. It is flowing to the sea. Can the Minister think of Rain Water Conservation instead of water from the Sea. The rivers need to be cleaned of accumulated silt in summer so that water remains in the river by 2-5 meter deep during rainy season. Now within 3 days rain our small dams are full and next three months water flows to the sea. Let everyone , Minister, officials, Private Companies and Citizens start thinking about Rain water Conservation, storage, harvesting before thinking about desalination.

    Desalination plant is need of the hour for various reasons, rain is not consistent, city is growing beyond the boundaries, people are migrating to IXE in fast space, demand for water is growing,supply is interrupted mostly during summer time. There will be direct and indirect employment opportunities for hundreds of people, it is one time investment. It is a standby and alternative arrangements during dry season and not whole year

    During summer April and May I need ten thousand litres per day for our own plantation. Please provide water from river and not from sea. We need free of water since it is natural resource and nobody is paying rain god to pour rain.

    There is no question of considering it. Implement this useful project. Use Thumbe water for drinking purpose and use sea water for misc. purpose and thus solve water crisis during summer.

    DO you know that desalination is the costliest form of producing potable water. It does not make economic sense to desalinate and provide water for cities like Mangalore which have abundant sources of fresh water. What is important is conservation not produce more

    This project will be a non starter because desalination cost will be so expensive, govt. may have to subsidize drinking water to the common man. Chennai is doing desalination of sea water, 100 Million Liters per Day plant, with Spanish company, but it is producing only 90 MLD, cost of the water is US$ 1.03/KL (1000 liters) where as cauvery river water to bangalore costs about Rs.58/KL.

    As many said we are dumping about 2900 TMC of flood water every year to the Arabian sea (Bangalore requires only 40 TMC/year.) Impoundments of flood water from Nethravati river alone can supply drinking water requirement of entire Karnataka State. Govt. should think in this direction rather than going for costly solutions.
    By this way entire Mangalore city will get drinking water free of charges, besides around 2000 hectares farmland will be irrigated free of cost. Farmers and mangalore citizens will be the happiest people to support this project.

    This idiot doesnt know anything about governance. He was a known rowdy during his college days, Congress is filled with such thugs.These guys are underestimating the power of Tulunadu people, they are hell bent upon destroying our natural habitat,natural resource and create imbalance in the ecosystem and vegetation of Tulunadu region. We want a separate State, we all love our country very much but we cant stay in Karnataka any longer, its high time we introspect on what are the benefits we are getting staying with Karnataka only destruction. The revenue earned here through exports of resources and goods through our port and the Taxes collected end up in Bangalore in the pockets of corrupt politician like this. They have already divided our region by letting kasargod merge with Kerala and Kannadised our people in the Kundapura and Byndooor. Its high time we wake up and have our own identity just like every state in India, it is our birth right and according to the constitution of this country nobody can stop us from having a separate state of our own.

    We have no problem if they take purified sea water to Bengaluru and Kolar.
    It requires 300MW electricity. I think it is enough to light our 2 coastal districts.
    It is highly shameful that we have these state politicians. They do not preserve rain water. Then wasting tax payers money. Is it the way government should be?

    I beg to differ sir. Rain water harvesting is good. But you can't completely ignore sea water processing plant. Rain water depends on good monsoons for 2-3 months. Sea water processing possible all around the year. It's not unsafe as many might think either. In various heat stricken countries in the middle East and on ships of reputed shipping companies the fresh water generators are working wonders.

    What a foolish idea or are they making us fools?
    When we have enough natural water during monsoons there are many ways to preserve them for summer. But we do not do that, instead we bring yettinahole project and carry water to other place. Moreover desalination is a costly process and converted sea water will be expensive. Who has to be blamed?

    Natural water of Mangalore to Kolar through Yettinahole. Processed sea water for Mangaloreans. Congress politicians are spinning money anywhere and everywhere. Congress is not sure of a come back during next elections and is at the verge of being extinct from national politics. Whatever gathered during next two years need to support rest of life! Democracy without trace of morality on one side and sans option for recall to the other is akin to suicide!

    Surprising that MR Roshan Baig has spoken. Is he working? When there was so much of hue and cry about the Hattihole project and water scarcity why was he silent? He should have decided to initiate action on the Sea Water Processing Plant. Poor Performance on his part as a Cabinet Minister.
