Bantwal, Jul 24: “Out of Rs 3,000 crores approved for improvement of state highways as per proposal sent to the union government, Rs 205 crore have been released for the development of different roads in undivided Dakshina Kannada district,” said Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai.

Speaking after ground breaking ceremony for the development of Suratkal-Kabaka road worth Rs 18.83 crore under state highway project at Punchame near Polali on Saturday, July 23, he said that Rs 125 crore and Rs 80 crore have been released for Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts respectively.

Recollecting that he had sent a proposal to the union government under economic development project as per the suggestion of Infosys vice-president in 2010 when he was the MLA, he said that the proposal has helped for the release of funds.

“I am glad to have contributed in the development programmes of this area. The Puttur Vidhana Sabha constituency's Salethur-Vitla-Kabaka road will be developed at a cost of Rs 4 crore out of Rs 18.83 core. The present 5.5 metre-wide road will be widened to seven metres and made two-lane. The road will be laid with concrete in some places besides constructing 23 gutters. Road safety sign boards, warning boards and crash barriers will be erected. A project to develop Kshetra Polali field will be prepared soon.” Rai said.

“While a Samudaya Bhavan is being constructed at Benjanapadavu, Rs 50 lacs have been approved for the boundary wall for the taluk sports ground. Panjemangeshwara Bhavan and Ambedkar Bhavan work near taluk panchayat will be taken up soon,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, taluk panchayat member Chandrashekar Shetty said that Bantwal Vidhana Sabha constituency is in the second place in development in state. “The efforts and achievements of Minister Ramanatha Rai is the reason for it. All-round development is possible when people support people’s representatives,” he said.

Taluk panchayat member Yashwanth Kotian, Shivaprasad, Mallika Shetty, BUDA president Pius Rodrigues, Kariangala gram panchayat president Chandravathi, former president Chandrashekar Bhandary, Badagabelloor gram panchayat vice-president Yogish Soorla, Congress leader B H Khader, contractor Iqbal Ahmed, PDO Nayana and others were present on the dais.

PWD assistant executive engineer Umesh Bhat presented the technical report. Chandrahasa Pallipadi welcomed. Panchayat member Veena Acharya proposed vote of thanks. Avinash Kadeshwalya compered the programme.

Finally an acknowledgment from minister Ramanath Rai, that the BJP Government at centre does acknowledge the request of Congress Government at State. Three years of ruling by their own party leaders at centre, did not produce any results.

Let's see how much of this amount is actually utilized for 'road development'.

We have become accustomed to a lions share of public funds disappearing without any trace/without accountability. At the end of these projects, our roads will certainly be in a worse condition than they were during the British rule.

Hope some roads would get a layer of asphalt and by next monsoon the situation will remain same..Its same reason, will blame on weather and look forward for more sanctions.. If we have qualified and merit based officials and good politicians may be we could save millions by planning & by providing quality infrastructure...
