Bantwal, Jul 24: Elected women representatives of grama panchayat here have started a campaign to protect nature and sources of water to the next generation by way of ‘Jalasaksharatha campaign'.

As the ground water level decreases every year, the women's group has come forward to create awareness about adverse effects on environment due to inclination toward borewells, excessive use of water, destruction of plants and trees. The decision in this regard was taken in Bantwal taluk Sugrama Sangha meeting. They also discussed about holding solar energy campaign, school admission campaigns and other campaigns beneficial to people in 10 villages.

The Sugrama Sangha members as first stage of the campaign will dig between two to twenty trenches around their houses depending upon the area of their land so that rainwater may be absorbed by the ground. They will also plant between 2 to 5 saplings. They also want to dig trenches in Anganwady, schools and houses. The group has decided to conduct the campaign in Naringana, Balepuni, Amtadi, Alike, Vitla Padnooru, Kolnadu, Salethur, Manchi, Netla Mudnooru, Peruvai grama panchayat limits under the guidance of Jana Shikshana trust's Sheena Shetty and Krishna Moolya.

The group wants to dig 10,000 thousand trenches in each grama panchayat as more than 500 trenches have been dug already. It is praiseworthy that women have come forward for the task.

Sugrama Sangha president Dakshayini, office bearers Chetana, Sumana, Sunanda, Baby, Revathi, Leelavathi, Pramila, Kamala, Nalinakshi, Sudha Shetty, Harinakshi, Jayanthi, Jyothi and others active in the campaign will spread the message to save and preserve water.
