Mangaluru, Jul 26: "We are the nation that showed to the world that a war can be won without fighting on the battlefield and that it can be won with love and peace," said Bhushan G Borase, superintendent of police (SP) of Dakshina Kannada.

He was addressing a programme organised by the Lions Club to mark Kargil Vijay Diwas at Lions Seva Mandir in Mallikatte.

"In Harappa and Mohenjodaro, we have the oldest civilisations on earth. We gave great leaders like Mahatma Gandhiji to the world who taught non-violence and advocated love and peace. We have achieved remarkable progress in various fields. People of Indian origin are at the topmost positions in some of the world's biggest brands. We aim to produce 20,000 MW of power within a few years.

"In spite of such achievements we still need to achieve a lot more progress in a number of fields. The number of Nobel Prizes obtained by Indians do not cross single digits. Also, being a nation with such a huge population, we have not been able to win many medals in the Olympics. I call upon the students to take a pledge to win a medal for the country," he said.

Lions Club district governor Arun Shetty who inaugurated the programme said, "Patriotism does not lie only in fighting for the country at the war front but also in being a good citizen of the country. We must not violate traffic rules. Respect the rules of the land and be a model citizen."

Three ex-servicemen namely Shrikanth Shetty, Vasanth Kayarmar and Joachim D'Souza who served the Indian Air Force, Army and Navy respectively were felicitated on the occasion.

Dakshina Kannada Ex-Servicemen's Association president Vikram Datta, Sanchita Nandagopal from Centre for Integrated Learning, Col Bhandary and others were present.
