Bengaluru: Bus strike called off after Govt agrees for 12.5% pay hike

Bengaluru, Jul 27 (IANS): The strike by 1.23 lakh employees of the four state-run road transport corporations in Karnataka was called off after three days on Wednesday evening after the state government agreed to increase their wages by 12.5 percent instead of 10 percent offered earlier.

"We have called off the indefinite strike after the government agreed to increase our wages by 12.5 percent and consider other demands," Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation's workers' union general secretary H.V. Anantha Subbarao told reporters here.

Bus services resumed from 6 p.m. in Bengaluru and other cities and towns across the state after the union leaders of KSRTC, NWRTC, NERTC and BMTC advised members to report for duty, providing relief to thousands of commuters who faced harrowing time since Monday when strike paralysed their movement.

"Intra-state and inter-state services have also been resumed to ferry passengers across cities and towns in the state and neighbouring states," an official told IANS.

As the agitated public expressed outrage over the standoff between the state government and the employees through various fora, including social media, news channels and print media, a climb down by both sides led the unions call off the strike though their demand for 30-35 percent hike was rejected as untenable.

The corporations are reported to have incurred Rs 51 crore loss due to the three-day strike and damage to about 120 buses in stone-throwing incidents across the state.

The wage hike will result in an additional burden of Rs 2,800 crore over the next four years to the exchequer.

KSRTC and BMTC have earned a good name as 2 of the most efficient Public Transport Corporations in India, for which, their managements as well as staff have to be congratulated.

But the sad part is that, they have been able to increase their profits by up to 35%, only at the cost of the commuters, by charging perhaps the highest tariff among all the public sector transport corporations in India.

Now, with a new wage settlement having been arrived and the strike having been withdrawn, it is the bounden duty and responsibility of the management as well as the staff of both the organisations, to keep up the same high standards of operational efficiency, upgrade the facilities by introduction of newer and safer/more fuel-efficient and less polluting buses. Also, better facilities are to be provided to the commuters in the buses as well as the bus stands and bus shelters.

It is to be kept in mind that large transport organisations need to invest lakhs of crores of Rupees for replacement of their ageing fleet, as well as for technological upgradation, and sufficient amount of the profits is to be set aside for this purpose.

A welcome move by employees of KSRTC and others who called off the strike. Many commuters had a tough time during these last three days. It was good on part of the government to agree for 12.5% pay hike, even though the demand was much higher.
