Mangaluru: Street vendors protest against city corporation

Mangaluru, Jul 28: Dakshina Kannada District Street Vendors Association under the banner of CITU held a rally from PVS to Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) here on Thursday July 28 to protest against MCC.

Addressing the protesters, Sunil Kumar Bajal, honorary president of the association said, "Though the street vendors bill has been passed in parliament, the union and state governments have failed to implement this bill effectively. The town vendors committee had been constituted 9 months ago, but no meeting has been conducted. MCC has failed to renew the identity cards issued to 208 street vendors. Though 350 street vendors had applied for identity cards at MCC, they failed to issue them. Without taking into consideration the town vendors committee, MCC went forward to evict them."

"Constitutionally street vendors are demanding their rights. Street vendors occupy just 5% of the place in the entire city and in 95% of the city there are no street vendors. Traffic inconvenience is caused because of the builders who have constructed apartments in violation of the law and without proper parking facilities. When BJP was in power in the corporation, they had conducted a raid against the street vendors, but in the subsequent elections, people eliminated them. If Congress too does the same thing, people will teach them the same lesson." he added.

CPI(M) leader Vasanth Achari also spoke at the protest.

    All has the right to live and earn decently, but should not trouble others like, encroaching footpaths (meant for walking) encroaching parking areas (meant for car parking)
    If one thing goes wrong, all will go wrong:- Vendors block footpaths and parking areas, people walk on the streets, cars parked on the streets hindering smooth flow of traffic, and pedestrians are at the risk of accidents.
    Street vendors should get a marked area for selling their products

    No Street vendors anywhere in the city or outside of the city. All should bear licenses to carry out business. No excuses to anybody. These street vendors are blocking our pedestrians.

    With due respect to all the street vendors in Mangalore, they must understand they are doing the business on public places which are hazardous to the general public. If you occupy footpath and vehicle parking places it's a nuisance both to the general public and vehicle owners. Think about it. Would these street vendors if they are so keen to carry out this kind of business, will they go to a place which govt. will allot to carry out the street vending business? So it's not your right, you can request. MCC should make sure that public places are free & safe to the general public.

    Street vendors can request, but not demand. They are on public land and any occupation of road by vendor or builder is equally uncalled for. Just because a filthy rich builder does it, it does not give a licence to the vendors to do the same. The government should issue licences only to those who use carts which are movable and not stationary. Most street vendors occupy a place and then slowly go on to construct pucca structures causing inconvenience to both public and traffic. Small insignificant parties like communists incite them using jealousy as a tool against the rich and make them feel they are doing the right thing.

    Truly feel sorry for the street vendors as they prefer to work and earn instead of stealing or robbing. As the citizens of this country they also must get equal opportunity to earn but not at any cost like blocking the foot paths and making mess everywhere The local administration has to chalk out appropriate plan so as to make their life easy.

    There is a general perception that if you go to Central Market or street parallel to fish market near State Bank, you would find cheaper rates on fruit and vegetables. But my experience is that the prices are cheaper in hyper markets like More or Spar retail outlets, plus quality stuff you would get.

    These street vendors should sell poducts with less profit because they don't pay rent and other maintenance charges. Their strike is uncalled for.

    Every where protest.
    State more of seen strike..as compare to any other state.
    Law abiding personnels either police, home guards or advocates not happy with government. Now it's the turn of bus employees and street vendors.
