Mangaluru, Jul 30: Activists of Sri Rama Sene (SRS) on Saturday July 30 raided St Thomas Aided Higher Primary School at Padu Bandanthila here, alleging that Urdu and Arabic were being 'forcibly' taught to students.

It is said that based on a complaint by locals, about 50 to 60 activists raided the school. The activists said that every Saturday between 9.15 to 10 am, students of 6th and 7th standards were 'forced' to learn Urdu and Arabic.

The activists on Saturday raided the school and questioned the management on this, and also confronted the teacher who was taking up Urdu and Arabic classes.

Speaking to reporters, zonal president of Sri Rama Sene Anand Shetty said, "There is a certain policy in the school. Students of all religions come here to obtain education. They are forcibly taught Urdu and Arabic and we strongly oppose this, as it is against the tenets of the Indian Constitution. Even though Urdu and Arabic are not part of the curriculum, these languages are being taught here for the last four months.

"Hence, today we raided the school and caught the teacher red-handed teaching these languages," he said, adding, "If the school management wants to teach Urdu and Arabic, let it also teach other scriptures like the Bhagavad Gita and the Vedas."

It is said that the activists spoke to the headmaster of the school, who reportedly assured that the Urdu and Arabic classes would be stopped with immediate effect.

Teaching Arabic only to interested students: Headmaster

Speaking to daijiworld, Melwyn Braggs, headmaster of St Thomas Aided Higher Primary School said that only Arabic and not Urdu was being taught to students, and that too only to students who are interested in learning it.

"We are teaching only Arabic and not Urdu as alleged, and we are teaching only interested students before class hours. We do not teach Arabic or Urdu during school hours. The decision to teach Arabic was taken after putting forward the proposal in the PTA meeting. Apart from Arabic we also teach French, German and Karate," he said.

Asked if the classes would be discontinued henceforth, he said, "We will discontinue all extra-curricular classes including Karate. If the people do not want them, there is no point in having them."

On whether the management would file a complaint against SRS activists, he said, "No, they did not vandalise the place or cause much trouble. We will not file any complaint. However, after the police came to know about this raid, they visited us to take stock of the situation."

Learning any language that is useful in communication is essential in the globalized world. Arabic and Spanish speaking people are highly in demand in the western part of the world.
I simply do not understand why the media is using the word "Raid" for criminal trespassing and giving the legitimacy for such illegal activities. Raids can be conducted by one who has legal authority. If a drunkard beggar barge into an educational institution force them what to do is called a "Raid" B.S.
Minority institutions can teach any languages to the interested students including dead old languages like Latin and Sanskrit. Arabic language ranks as fifth widely spoken language in the world.

Arabic as a language is not confined to a particular religion though vast majority speaking this language are Muslims. There are Arabic speaking Christians and even a few Jews in countries like Lebanon, Egypt, Syria and Iraq. Arabic that is taught in St. Thomas School is secular Arabic whereas that which is taught in madrasas or mosques is religious Arabic, that is, limited to learning Koran. Students can have better knowledge of the language by learning it in formal schools and such institutions.

The activists wanted an excuse to raid the school so they included Urdu as an “extra curriculum” in their agenda and also “complaint from locals forcing students” to learn these two languages. First of all, why a Christian school wants to “force” students to learn these two languages? Are they going to convert the students into Muslim? Right minded people will not buy the theory of these activists.
Arabic and Urdu are two beautiful languages. During my Gulf-days I always wanted to learn Arabic but did not find any school in Mangalore who could teach the language. Finally I was trained by an Egyptian friend of mine who taught me to read and write the language. I remember how I used to spend my spare time in practicing Arabic. It was a great compliment for me when he said my hand-writing was beautiful than his. I became self-reliant as far as Arabic part of my duties were concerned. I also learned French that helped me get extra points when I applied for immigration. What I am trying to say is, learning a language is like learning a trade. Today millions of Indians are employed in the Mid-East Countries and it would be a plus point if they have at least a basic knowledge in Arabic. The RSS activists cannot paint any schools in saffron color. The choice to choose to learn something belongs to students and their parents, not to RSS activists. Who are they to impose something in others personal life?

If SRS wants Sanskrit, it is good, let them provide a teacher who can help before school starts since this is optional class.

That will be great and positive. Students who likes to attend will be happy rather than attacking and closing extra classes.

What is a big deal in learning any language. There are thousands of Hindu brothers even mastered in Urdu language at university levels. Most of the lyricist in Bollywood are/and have been from the majority community and they pen beautiful romantic and sad songs with a blend of Urdu and Hindi languages. And, so is the Arabic language. Many of my Hindu and Christian friends employed in KSA and other Gulf countries attend Arabic classes to improve their PRO and dealings with locals.

Having said, there shouldn't be any virtual force on anyone to learn any language. It should be left to the individual choice.

Jobless goondas need to be put into jail forever. Nothing is taught by force in this school. If parents are interested that their children should learn Arabic or Urdu, then school is obliged to their demands and nothing is forced on students. These goons are black mole in the society and need to be eliminated. We don't want any anti social elements. Coming back to Sanskrit bakhths, if students are interested government can give an option. But no one can force anyone to force any language. We are living in a democratic country and we cannot accept goondaism by these crooked activists backed by BJP. BJP stands for Bhanda Janara Party. Hahaha..I feel pity on these jokers. Bhagwadgita, vedas are languages??? Most of the Hindi movie songs written by using 60% Urdu words. Mother tongue of Christians in Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia & Syria is Arabic. Even i studied Sanskrit as a first language in my High School at Admar. What is the problem in teaching or learning any language? Schools will not force anybody to learn any language. But if muslim students are more in numbers we use to request School Management to keep one of the language optional at least once in a week. Even they can keep Sanskrit classes if the more students are interested to learn. If Doctor or Pharmacists come to UAE, first they have to pass Arabic exam then only they will get licence to do the practice. I think one day the Sangha Parivar will demand to ban English also in India. Police have to book these SRS goondas under goonda act and lesson should be taught.

These stupids doesn't know what is the value of learning a language. Either Samskrith, French, Germany, Arabic , whatever languages is good if any school teach their students. It is an asset for them for their future career. Lakhs of Indians are working around gulf countries where the official language is Arabic. Why not our students may go for job or business to the gulf countries tomorrow and in advance if they know Arabic it will be a great help for them.
Thousands of Indians regardless or religious talking and learning Arabic in the gulf countries who are already working there.
We really should appreciate the Head Master of St. Thomas School for teaching their students Arabic.
Such an illustrates taking our nation to the stone age.
Secondly they should not barge into the school along with 50 goondas. This is school not their gadang. If they want to talk 2 or three their nalaaik leaders can go and talk to the respected head master.
Need to be arrested these goons so that in future such dirty incidents should not repeated.
My heartiest sympathy to the school head master.

now a days in arab countries to get govt/ministry office job you must know to read write and speak fluent arabic.and for some private jobs they put a clause, arabic language is an added advantage. there is nothing wrong in learning anything. it will help one day or the other. SRS saying that school should teach veda and scriptures, but here they dont teach qurran, only language no?use your wisdom!!
but here i saw the board in which it is written on board, after going through it made me bit confusing
i am here in Kuwait for the past 16 years, and i have traveled almost all gulf countries and here every one including kuwaitis for restaurant in arabic call it as MATHAAM. and for small shop BAKKALA, for clinic THABEEB,for big hotel FUNDOOK,andd hospital MUSTHAZUA/MUSTHASHFA,etc etc. here I could see something else!!More than this I studied in christian institutions, there was a subject RELIGION once in a week . during this session everybody goes to their respective religion classes.
