Udupi, Jul 30: The much-awaited demand of making picnic spot 'Mannu Palla Lake' open for nature lovers has finally been realized. The lake authority has decided to open the place for public to enjoy its scenic beauty.

Located just three kilometres away from Udupi, the lake attracts nature lovers from all places far and near.

Mannu Palla development committee, chaired by district commissioner, has been formed to look after the development of the lake. During the term of former DC M T Reju (2011), a proposal of Rs 5 crore was submitted to tourism and urban development department for its development.

The tourism department had released Rs 80 lac in first phase which was used for building two kilometres long six feet wide jogging track with interlock tiles around the lake. Now six feet wide walking track is being constructed along the lake for people. This path will be helpful for senior citizens.

Moreover, Rs. 1.32 crore has been spent for fencing, construction of a water tank, installation of 40 solar lamps, 36 granites benches, steel dustbins and boards recently at the lake.

Nirmithi Kendra Udupi floated tenders to develop the lake through Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode under finance, operate, design, and overall developments last year.

Nagaraj, a developer, took this project just two months back on five-year lease. The committee is not just aiming to develop the lake but also facilitate water sports and recreational activities for tourists.

“I took the work as my hobby. I will develop this place as the hot spot of tourism. I plan to plant 9000 flower plants in next four months to beautify the location. There is no entry fee but we charge for boating,” said Nagaraj. Under his supervision, a fast food cafe has been opened on July 29.

In five months time, Nagaraj plans to build an auditorium with a capacity of 5,000 people and a small hall with a seating capacity for 2,000 people along with advanced restaurants.

“To maintain the place, we need Rs 1 lac per month which includes maintenance of lake, playground, roads, garden and its surroundings. I am also looking forward to sponsors and donors who are interested to invest in this place. There is no doubt that this spot will be one of the most sought after picnic spots in coming days,” said confident Nagaraj.

Good to know on the development of the recreational area around the lake. Please ensure cleanliness of the space around the lake and keep the water clean. Food stalls keep them to the minimum and dispose off waste on a daily basis. A cycling tract for two wheel and tri-cycles on rental would be appreciated. Children play area if provided should use synthetic turf to avoid injury and cleanliness of play area. CCTV surveillance and guards are a must. Please declare the area as a NO Smoking Zone. Entrance fee is welcome and please eliminate antisocial elements from entering the facility at all times. Occasional visit by VIP's would ensure proper maintenance and additional funds for improvement.
Please introduce wind surfing and also provide a proper docking platform for the boats. Motorised boat/scooter to be used only by life guards for emergency and safety situation. Life-vests for all ages to be made available and maintained properly.
I wish the organisers and maintenance Team all the best and hope to visit the lake during my next visit to India.

NO BBQ stands please. It will pollute the area. It create so much dust, smoke, waste plastic, papers. Even in gulf countries like kuwait they ban BBQ stands in public places like gardens, beaches. Reason pollution , not maintaining cleanliness.

Pollution due to smoke and garbage is done by the people. When having BBQ parties in the park. rules of cleanliness and upkeeping should be followed. They can't enjoy the party and leave the place without cleaning. Also, they should have enough garbage bins for disposal at every place.

The lake looks similar to Madivala lake in BTM, Bangalore. However, the water looks cleaner than what it is here. They need to make sure water does not get stagnated which in turn results in deadly diseases. Would love to visit it once.

People are freely boating without any life support. Please make life jackets & life buoys compulsory and ensure crocodiles don't migrate in.
The famous isolated Mayem Lake in Bicholim-Goa is now shut for tourists because of crocodile menace.

Please do not allow motor boats which use fuel because this pollutes the water instead they should only allow rowing boats and it will create job opportunities and at the same time does not pollute the water

I am extremely delighted to hear this news. It will be a great picnic spot and as Jossey Saldanha has commented CCTV is a must. It will cost some more money but it is for the safety of the people who visit Mannu Palla Lake. Thanks to Umesh Marpalli for the photo coverage of that lake and surrounding area.
