'A minute more and there would have been a tragedy': Emirates passengers recount horror

DUBAI, Aug 3 (PTI) : Three hundred people, 226 of them Indians, had a narrow escape on Wednesday when a packed Thiruvananthapuram-Dubai Emirates flight crashlanded and caught fire here.

All 300 people on board were evacuated safely and immediately. Video footage showed smoke billowing out of the Boeing 777 after the accident.

While the cause of the accident is not yet clear, pictures of the plane indicated that the front landing gear collapsed which caused the plane to slide.

Flight EK521 departed at 10.19am from Trivandrum International Airport and was scheduled to land at 12.50pm local time at Dubai International Airport.

"Most of the those travelling in the plane were from Kerala. There was no problem during the flight. There was no announcement about any technical snag. We felt as if the flight first landed, went up again and hit the ground.

When smoke engulfed the flight, we realised there was something amiss and we felt there was some danger. It was difficult to open the emergency exit at first. If we had been stranded inside the aircraft even for a minute more, there would have been a tragedy. Some of the passengers were injured while trying to jump from the emergency exit."

Another passenger on the flight

"People have inhaled smoke. Those who left the plane early might not have. But those who went out later have inhaled smoke."

"I couldn't believe my eyes. I was absolutely horrified. The slides came out but they were blowing all over the place. People managed to escape -- from what I saw -- before there was a big explosion, with flames everywhere. We had taxied and stopped right next to where it was happening and people in my plane were just saying 'oh my god' and 'get us off this plane."

Emirates airline flight crash-lands at Dubai airport, passengers safe

Dubai, Aug 3 (Agencies) : An Emirates plane with 275 people on board was involved in an accident on landing Wednesday at Dubai airport but all the passengers were evacuated safely, the government said.

Footage on social media showed smoke billowing from the aircraft.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear.

"An Emirates plane coming from India has been involved in an accident on landing at Dubai International," the government's Dubai Media Office said on its Twitter account.

"All passengers were evacuated safely and no injuries have been reported so far," it said.

All departures from Dubai International Airport have been halted "until further notice," it added.

Emirates confirmed the incident, saying that the plane was a Boeing 777.

"We can confirm flight EK521 from Thiruvananthapuram to Dubai has been involved in an accident at Dubai International," the carrier said on its Twitter account.

"There were 275 passengers and crew on board. Our main priority now is the safety and well-being of all involved," it said.
Emirates said it had "no further information on what may have caused the accident".

"Our priority remains with the passengers and crew involved," it said.

Footage on social media showed thick black smoke coming out of the centre of the plane while the fuselage appeared to be lying on the runway with escape slides opened.

The Dubai Media Office said the fire "has been contained," adding that emergency teams at the airport and Emirates are "well trained to deal with such incidents".

The accident comes almost four months after a plane belonging to Dubai's other carrier, flydubai, crashed and burst into flames as it was landing in Rostov-on-Don, in southern Russia, killing all 61 people onboard.

On July 26, an Emirates Boeing 777-300 aircraft heading to the Maldives made an emergency landing in Mumbai because of a "technical fault".
Dubai International is the world's largest hub in terms of international passengers, and is the base for Emirates, from where it serves more than 153 destinations.

Emirates, Qatar Airways and Abu Dhabi's Etihad have seized a significant portion of transcontinental travel, capitalising on the geographic locations of their Gulf hubs.

Emirates is the largest single operator of the Boeing 777, as well as the Airbus A380 superjumbo, and has expanded its fleet to 250 aircraft last year.

God has shown mercy unto his people. No matter how intelligent and skilled we are, you alone Lord can save us from all evil and dangers. We humble ourselves and with a grateful heart we say thank you Lord. Just in a minute so many families would have been in deep grief and sorrow, but the merciful hand of our loving and caring God was upon that sight.

Lord, give us the wisdom and knowledge to understand and love one another and help us to walk in the righteous way that pleases you.

The videos from inside the aircraft emerging now on social media shows the foolishness of Indian travelers.
When the emergency gates were opened and instructions were given to jump out, people were busy in collecting the luggage and laptops from the shelves. They were not only delaying the evacuation, but also were putting lives of other passengers at risk.
If it was a flight from any European or American origin, the evacuation could have been completed in 30 seconds!!

Dubai proved that it has highly skilled, motivated personnel who can rise to the occasion and save the day. Every departments were alert and ready within minutes of mishaps. Passengers were treated and Emirates arranged limousines for them to reach home. The top officials themselves reached within no time to oversee operation rescue. The busiest airport back to normal operation within 6 -7 hours. This is what called Spirit of Dubai. Hats off to all. The sad part of it, one brave Emarati fire fighter lost his life during rescue operation. Heartfelt condolences to family and salute to his bravery. He is a true martyr.

We should appreciate pilot who landed accurately without harming much. Even he didn't frightened when fire seen up above in the sky itself. When heard how passengers are alighted first and then crew members we should proud of them. Even dubai airport done wonderful job restoring to normal within six hours. Great pilot well experienced had no mistake in his career.

I think without knowing the facts one should not blame anyone. It's easy for u to blame the pilot as you were not in his position. If you take a better look at the final picture of the plane one cannot believe that there are actually any survivors, so you should rather appreciate him coz there are instances like the mangalore air crash where the ending hasn't been so fortunate.
