Udupi, Aug 5: Unscientifically laid humps were erected overnight on roads in several parts of Udupi earlier this week, causing fear of accidents and hardship among motorists. These speed-breakers have been laid without installing any signboard on the road. The speed-breakers are laid at the junctions where the inner roads meet the highway at Udyavar Bayilapade, Mattu, Shankerapura and other places.

Not only are the humps unscientific, they even pose a threat to motorists especially at night. Worse, locals do not know who to complain to.

Many felt that even at a normal speed, it was as if 'climbing a hill'. Moreover, the absence of signboards on roads make them practically impossible to spot from a distance.

Vehicles with low ground clearance are likely to hit the speed-breakers. Locals say that bikes skid on them.

These humps have not been able to ease traffic on roads. It is necessary to take preventive measures against speeding, but these speed-breakers pose danger. Officials concerned need to inspect the work and take appropriate action to prevent accidents.

I always see in the comments section were people ask for authorities to put up humps as a solution for speeding. So what you ask is what you get.

Road humps are good for motorists as well as pedestrians, But here should be signs as well as some visible marking on the humps. Or they should have reflectors before the bumps. That way there can be no accidents.

Road hump are not the real issue, the points to be observed are:-
Is there a real necessity of road hump in that particular place?
Has the hump marked with white stripes?
Did they install road signs indicating, "Road hump ahead"?

The real requirement is professional engineering and safety aspects, but, wondering who does these kind of unprofessional works?

Even though the news is bout speed humps, many photographs clearly show the traffic rule violation of motorbike riders not wearing helmets. They have to consider their safety and compliance first than complaining about speed humps.

All the speed humps/bumps are required to be painted in yellow lines to attract the attention of motorists from far to enable them to get prepared to slow down the vehicles. Moreover the traffic rules are to be tightened. The accidents are being occurred daily due to reckless and careless driving by some of the motorists.

Unscientific humps appear overnight really make for bumpy ride for the motorist especially in the night without any signboards. The concerned authorities who instructed to construct these humps should have taken all pros and cons before taking any decision. At least they should have installed sign boards in order to prevent any untoward incidents.

Going by the pictures, the humps are non effective to SUV's. SUV's have high wheel base and with a speed of 40-45 can negotiate these speed-breakers without any problem.

these are much better than small and sharp humps which hurt car going slowly much more than faster one. But in humps like one showed in pic, slow movers are not affected. only fast movers will feel the pain (hence serves the purpose)
