Mangaluru: MCC demolishes petty shops at Kavoor, allegedly without notice

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (JD)

Mangaluru, Aug 5: The officials of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) on Thursday August 4 evening demolished petty shops in Kavoor market under police protection, allegedly without serving prior notice to the shop owners. Even fish stalls were razed.

The demolition resulted in a flash protest near the Kavoor market premises. Fisherwomen and vegetable vendors were seen selling their stocks in the pouring rains.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Abdulla, who has been running his fish stall from 25 years, alleged that the shops were demolished without issuing prior notice. "It is true that the waste water was flowing on the road and a few days ago we had stopped it. We had also constructed a drain for it following the instructions from MCC officials. Now they have demolished our shops all of a sudden.

"When we questioned the officials, they said that the demolishion was done to construct the new market for which ground-breaking ceremony was held a month ago. They could have demolished after giving an alternative shelter to all of us. They did not even construct a toilet near the market. We have seen male migrants from various places answering nature's call in front of women fish vendors," he said.

Hemavathi, who sells fish, expressed dissatisfaction at MCC mayor Harinath who is also the corporator of the ward. "Harinath had promised that he would provide us a temporary shelter during the previous elections. It has been three years since then and now he is the mayor of MCC, but we are still without a shelter.

"We do not have any basic facility here. Forget about toilet, there is no drinking water facility either. There was a tap but they have removed it. They have snatched our daily bread from us," she said.

City unit secretary of SDPI Mohammed Haneef alleged, "When the MCC officials can let a private building encroach the market space, why can't they provide a temporary shelter? They could have done the demolition even after the rainy season. We will stop the traffic from tomorrow and let everyone face the heat till all the street vendors are allowed to earn their daily bread here."

Acted as per locals' complaint: Mayor

When contacted, mayor Harinath said, "We acted as per the complaint by locals. We had issued a warning to the vendors about six months ago that waste fish water should not be let on the road. We had also told them that we would be starting the work on the new market on August 7 or 8. We will give them an alternative shelter within six months, but till then they will have to make their own arrangements."

Asked why vegetable vendors were also evacuated, he said, "The property belongs to the MCC. The vegetable vendors would sit on the roads to sells their goods. We have also removed their tarpaulins."

Why they can not make an amendment in constitution that every citizens must have basic things, education, shelter, bread giving job, and normal living. One thing we all will see, only very very few present political leaders/representatives are honest and trustworthy.

Here both have done mistakes.Either MCC or vendors are gone a right path.Mcc had not provided a right place to sell their products till the new market is ready or not given Attention for hygienic aspect.Mcc is responsible for hygienic conditions of City,so that water Drains off in a closed System, not mosquitoes or flys spread, dogs and rats move about. Here they failed .When no official notice is given, shouldn't demolish Shops without pre notice.Vendors too even fish sellers or whoever ,follow the MCC s orders? Now in rainy season ,what and how they can earn their daily bread?does mcc gives them compensation?they must have had a loss ,how can they survive?who removes the mess they created?MCC must do it.It is a bigger nuesense if they dont, than the old market. No proper System at all in MCC .

Mr.Harinath,Fish vendors are selling fish near Junction of Shakthi Nagar-Nanthoor Bikarnakatte Road, about 1000 meters away from Nanthoor Junction. Vehicles park on the road blocking highway to purchase the fish. Morning is busy time, and these vehicles block smooth flow of traffic. I have spoken to Kadri Traffic Inspector Mr Suresh Kumar. He has told these vendors to move away. They asked Him hree days time and now three months finished. Kindly clear this problem. It is very difficult for drivers who come from Shakthi Nagar Road to make right turn to merge into Bikarnkatta Nanthoor Road. Thank You Mayor,in Advance.

The vendors also set up shop without notic. Look at that messy stret. The pedestrians have to walk on the highway risking their lives. I urge the municipality to continue with un-noticed raids. Give them notice and the mess will never get cleared up.

Demolition is completely wrong without serving prior notice. Not everyone can afford to open the shop in complex. Shop owners took this option because, option was available by bribing some MCC old officers.

I agree that MCCmight have given notice to these people that they will demolish.but here in mangalore builders are completing thier big projects without any approach (road) to thier building & for approval of plan to such buildings fromMCC these corporators & planing authorities are bribed
Let anybody show a single building which has been demolished by MCC for illegal construction as per MCC
Both the political parties are involved in this bribe & they work together in such cases

It seems to be an arbitrary and barbarian act by MCC officials.Whatever may be the consequences, vendors should have been issued notice in a decent way but not orally.Demolishing their shops all of a sudden without any prior notice put all the vendors in a no-where situation. They should have been given an alternative places until the new market is built.Official say that vendors can sell or vend their products in road side. That also pose a threat to public.Under the circumstance, where will they go for their livelihood.Concerned MCC officials took a hurried action inhumanly. In order to mitigate the present situation, authorities concerned should provide the poor vendors an alternative place on humanitarian ground.Vendors might have been erred and at fault. There are many people depending on them for their livelihood.
