Puttur, Aug 7: Two brothers fought with each other over a trivial issue at Koppal near Padala in Uppinangady village in the taluk on Saturday August 6. The fight ended with the death of the younger sibling.

Dharnappa Poojary (40), son of the late Jarappa Poojary from Koppal here was killed. His elder brother, Kushalappa Poojary (52) happens to be the person accused of committing this act.

Both the sons of the late Jarappa Poojary lived together with their mother and did odd jobs for a living. Kushalappa Poojary reached his home on Saturday at 4.30 pm and fought with his younger brother. Sometime later, he hit Dharnappa Poojary hard with a wooden piece, after which Dharnappa collapsed to the ground and breathed his last.

Thereafter, police from Uppinangady station reached there and took Kushalappa, who was at the spot, into custody.

It is said that the brothers were liquor addicts and quarrels and fistfights between them were common. The locals had informed the police about these fights. Wives of both of them had deserted them and gone back to their parents homes several years back. It is said that there was a big fight between the brothers three weeks ago in which Dharnappa had injured Kushalappa with a sickle. But no case was filed in connection with this incident.

Kushalappa was in good mood after the murder. It is said that he could not flee as he had no money and no one lent him when he tried to borrow from them after the murder. He has three grown up children while Dharnappa has left behind wife, a son, and a daughter.

Why do we have the Panchayat and other civil society groups if we cannot take care and help the alcoholics and the deprived. It is sad that a district known for its human concern is witnessing murders, hate and violence.
