Blame has to be put equally on contractors and electricians. Especially in villages and small towns local electricians are not qualified. They just argue or wont listen at all and act as they know everything. They compromise on earth pit depth, charcoal to be put etc. JE will only visually inspect. No one will measure and check the ratings. Even if ELCB fuses off electrician will just jumper and leave it.
Please give house contracts to credible contractors and qualified electricians.
Rotary and similar clubs, social service organizations to run household safety campaigns.

To me here looks like a homely lady lost her concentration all of sudden due to a small baby around. Better such works done while baby sleeping.
Otherwise it wont allow to do so as she is alone at home. What happened is not good. Even while water around chances of getting shock.

RIP Preethi Lewis. Let the almighty console the family.

Many house holds do not have proper earthing. All appliances has to be run on 3 PIN socket, which has earth terminal connection besides Live supply and Neutral terminals. When the house wiring is done, many of the electrical Contractors to save few rupees for them, the Earth Terminal of the socket, which is the top terminal of the socket will not be connected to the ground and the wire which connects to the ground will be missing there and if there is leakage in the appliance, it will not pass to the grounding of the House earthing which should be 8 ft depth. Many of the contractors either they use 4 ft GI Pipe rather than specified 8ft pipe and run the GI wire instead of copper wire which GI wire gets rusted in the course of time and thus the electrical connection will loose its earthing connection.

Now there is device called ELCB(Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker) when installed at the premises, would save the life, as when the leakage from the appliance come in contact with the human beings, the power supply gets disconnected immediately and saves life.
I had installed the same in our house since 26 years, and it had saved my wife's and daughter lives, when my wife came in contact with live wire of the Iron Box and the power supply tripped immediately and their lives were saved. This happened when we were staying in Mysore in a rented house. the present house in Mangalore which 19 years old, is ELCB connected.

Markets do have substandard ELCB,s which costs around Rs. 600/- But the standard and good quality costs over Rs. 2000/-per piece. If the wiring in the house and the grounding was properly done, it would have saved Preeths life.
Readers atleast ensure that your house has proper Grounding Connection. The lives are more important than few rupees.

Make sure you have ELCB's installed apart from MCB's in your electrical system. This will prevent any such incident.

No safety standards, no proper earthing are the root cause of such accidents. We build big houses and spend lot of money, but when coming to electricity connections we compromise for just few thousand rupees. People should be made aware of these accidents. May her soul rest in peace.
