Govt wants security beefed up across the State for Independence Day

Bengaluru, Aug 11: Heads of industries and corporates having hundreds of employees such as information technology, manufacturing, garment in Bengaluru, Mangaluru, Mysuru, Hubballi etc have been advised by the State Government to make proper security arrangements by installing CCTV cameras and monitoring security round the clock to ensure peaceful Independence Day celebrations.

Speaking to reporters after reviewing the security arrangements across Karnataka, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara has directed State DG-IGP Om Prakash to ask all Superintendent of Police (SPs) and City Commissioners of Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Belagavi and Hubballi to step up vigilance in their respective jurisdictions.

"We want to be cautious and avoid any untoward incidents," the minister said.

The review meeting with senior police officers was held in Vidhana Soudha on Thursday.

With Independence Day celebrations on Monday, the State Government has directed all heads of corporate companies in cities across the State to step up security to prevent untoward incidents.

In the wake of blasts on the court premises in Mysuru, the need for vigilance has become very important, the minister said.

As new trends emerged in terrorism and new terrorist outfits formed across the globe, he said accountability has been fixed on senior police officers on making security arrangements.

“We should not be caught off-guard”, he said, adding: "our police officers are in regular touch with national agencies and intelligence.”

Dr Parameshwara said the State Intelligence Wing has been sensitized and senior officers have been asked to sensitize junior rank officers.

As there were no specific alerts from the Centre, the State Home department has issued general alert across the State to ensure peaceful celebrations of the Independence Day.

The police have been told to cordon off public grounds where I-Day celebrations being held on Monday.

With reports of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) agents recruiting agents in Kasaragod in Kerala, the minister said: “our police are watchful and do not want to take any chances."
