Kasargod, Aug 12: In an incident reported from Nileshwar in the district, a sand worker who was fleeing from the police, jumped into the rivulet and drowned. Two of his companions, who also had jumped into the rivulet, were rescued. The incident occurred on Thursday August 11 morning.

The deceased has been identified as M Ravi (48), a resident of Nedukanda, Nileshwar. His accomplices, Preman and Narayanan, escaped without any danger.

It is learnt that policemen were moving on the road by the side of a rivulet near Padannakad, searching for an accused relating to a case. Seeing them, these three, who were conducting sand mining, turned panicky, and jumped into rivulet from their boat to escape from the police.

A local, who saw this incident, immediately informed the police. The police, with help from locals, rescued two among them. The body of Ravi, who had already drowned, was retrieved by fire brigade staff who reached the spot later.

It is said that the three persons were collecting sand from the rivulet and storing the same on the bank. But no one knows why they took so much risk and jumped into the rivulet at the sight of policemen.

The body of the deceased was taken to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital for postmortem. Nileshwar police have registered a case.

it's mentioned in the report that "But no one knows why they took so much risk and jumped into the rivulet at the sight of policemen" , that's the panic mode you get in to when you are in to such illegal activities. just by seeing police you will get scared and try to escape from the place... now paid for some one's illegal benefit. Loss is only for his family, no support will be extended by those sand mafia people... People should think while getting in to such works.
