Puttur, Aug 12: A man accused of murdering a woman and her child and robbing them of gold ornaments in 2008 has been sentenced to death by the 6th additional district and sessions court here on Friday August 12.
Jayesh alias Jayesh Kanta alias Shakir alias Sahir (26), a resident of Shiradi Addahole here, was found guilty of murdering Soumya (23), wife of Lohith and their son three-year-old son Jishnu on August 2, 2008.
As per the complaint filed by Lohith in Uppinangady police station then, Lohith, on returning from work on the evening of August 2, 2008, saw Jayesh hurrying out of his house. Incidentally, Jayesh is a cousin of Lohith.
When Lohith entered the house, he found his wife and child lying in a pool of blood. Also, his wife's gold chain weighing 10 grams and other ornaments were missing.
Jayesh who went absconding after the incident was arresed on October 9, 2012 in Kerala by a police team led by the then sub-inspector Ravi B S who is presently the inspector at Puttur rural police station, along with the help of the Kerala police. After the double murder, Jayesh fled to Kerala, where he had changed his name to Sahir. He lived with a woman named Rahiya. Police sources said that he stayed in rented houses in different places such as Kayamkulam, Chettikulangara, Aratupu and others. On October 7, 2012, Jayesh and his friend Anas were arrested at Aratupu for assaulting women while under the influence of alcohol. While Anas was caught by the police, Jayesh managed to escape. The locals who gave him a chase and found him hiding on a coconut tree. The fire brigade was called and finally he was arrested by the police. Upon investigation, it came to light that he was an accused in the Puttur double murder case.
The then circle inspector Suresh Kumar B (presently serving in Mangaluru east police station) who took up the investigation succeeded in recovering the stolen gold and gathering witnesses and evidences. The chargesheet was filed on October 17, 2012.
Interestingly, in April this year, Jayesh had tried to escape from the court during the hearing. The public then caught him and handed him over to the police.
As many as 40 witnesses were examined in the court.
Advocate Uday Kumar was the public prosecutor in the case.
