Beltangady: Neglected by officials, life hangs in balance for these Koraga families

Beltangady, Aug 15: Five Koraga families, who have been subjected to utter neglect of the people, have been living in small tents made of plastic sheets on the river bank at Atrinje in Navara village under Sulkery gram panchayat limits. To reach these tents, one has to cross the river through a dangerous wooden log that serves as a bridge. This is a live example for the wretched condition of Koragas in the taluk.

These families too had dreamed of owning a house. They have migrated from place to place in the taluk, pitching tents there. However, for various reasons, the administrative machinery has readily kicked them out from each of these spots. Surprisingly, three of these families have not yet succeeded in getting ration cards. None of them have electoral identity cards. They have been deprived of civic amenities. As the families are driven by the burning desire to live on and build a good future for their children. With this aim, they have built tents in forest land on the river bank where their struggle with life is no ordinary. They are not aware how long will they be allowed to live here, and they live under constant fear of someone coming to evict them. They toil even to earn daily bread. Their plight looks strange, taking into account that successive governments have earmarked and spent hundreds of crores of rupees for the development of Koragas.

It has been a few months since these families made this place their home. One of these families had earlier been living at Naydaguri in Sulkery. They had been asked to stay there, assuring them that that site was reserved for being allotted to Koragas. Thereafter they were driven out. Another family, which was living in a tent by the roadside near Navoor came here with the hope that they would be given some land. All the families have similar stories to narrate.

Harish, and his wife, Harinakshi, Sandesh, Kamala and their four children, Tukudu and his two children, Pushpa and family, and Babu and family are the ones which have settled down in these tents. All these families are driven by the aim of providing good education to their children. They have admitted the children in different hostels to ensure that their education does not get affected. However, their efforts to find a secure future for their life have not succeeded.

These Koragas have approached every office and knocked at every door they could perceive of, in their determination to get a piece of land and roof on their heads. But they have not got anything in return. They had submitted applications seeking land and house from the government through their community association to the taluk social welfare department. The officials, instead of providing land or houses on their own, called village accountant of Kokrady village and asked him to show them the land. The village accountant led them directly to Mudipire in Sulkery village where they were asked to build houses inside the national park. All the five families had set up tents there as they were not aware that the land belonged to forest department.

Within a day, forest department officials reached there, and uprooted their tents. They became homeless and were driven to streets. From there they built their tents on the river bank in a spot which looks life forest. So far, no officials have approached them. As per information, this area has government land measuring five acres. These Koragas can carve out a future for them if this land is distributed to them. But unless someone takes the lead, they cannot hope to realize this dream. But who will take a lead is a question that has no answer as of now. The social welfare department has failed even to respond to their requests for ration cards and other facilities.

Reaching these five tents in itself is an arduous and adventurous task. As their tents are located on the riverbank, they have to cross the river either to go somewhere or to come back. For crossing the river, they have created a make-shift wooden bridge. Crossing this delicate bridge in itself poses a challenge, and children find it impossible to cross the bridge. Because of this problem, two children from these families have not attended school after monsoon season began. They plan to start attending school after rainy season.

Koraga woman, Harinakshi, says that they will be able to settle down and build a future if the government allots them land and help to build houses. She says that the families are committed to provide good education to children. She hopes that officials will at least lend an ear to their problems and meet their small demand.

Will give you a Million Rs. if you find one attempt from me in the past for such a document ! Not that I am so rich - all I studied with my parents help is until SSLC (Kannada) ! Rest all what I am is my self hardship and I insist others too do it !

    Harish,

Did you hear of two Catholic priests opted to serve Ebola patients in Africa ? Do you think they went there to convert people ?

Given you assurance that all the patients will convert to Hinduism, would any of the swami's have taken up the assignment ?

The same applies to Missionaries. Going by your principle, building a bridge for the Koraga community, they will be asked/required to convert ? In which era are you living man ?

Have you ever climbed a school run by Christians or any of your friends did ? How many of them got converted or were asked to ?

Harish, if missionaries serve to convert, why your cow protectors do not serve these people ? Koragas are not Hindus ? Are you ready to visit them and have a meal with them ? Why not even a single case of forcible conversion is not filed against anyone till date ? I am not a missionary. But, I was the first person in our whole village to treat them humanly and allow them to watch Mahabaarath serial on TV, sitting inside our hall when our neighboring upper caste families were never allowing them to enter even into their court yard. Have you ever done it ? People get voluntarily converted by seeing our selfless service and our love to humanity.

Christianity does not have caste system, but, there are different groups (Sects) who have a different religious belief other than the established and original Church, that is Catholic Church.

Dalit is a Marathi word used in 1880 by Mahatma Jyotiba Phule for outcasts and untouchables oppressed by Hindu Society.

Such a Dalit when converted to Christianity is called Dalit Christian in India and since Christianity does not have caste system, they are deprived of education and job reservation by Govt of India.

This is the clear answer without prejudice.

Don't be a spokesperson of any party but be a genuine humble human. There are much to attain by being social. Politician will play politics in your life. Be it any party, there will be few good one. For each of your problems, king and queen will not come down to your door to solve. It's foolish to expect it to happen. If govt has any programs then enlighten the fellow citizens to how to use. This is state govt responsibility. If Modi have to look after everything why there is a state govt.? We have seen in past scamgress govt not interested in any project where they cant do money.

Read these comments from Praveen, Kulshekar Monday, August 15, 2016

Koragas themselves don't have rights to enter temples and are untouchables and you treat them as scavengers. This is their Bhagya from their own community.

What else we can expect from you my dear friend?

    Shan,

In those 65 years, six years are by ABV - you forgot ? ABV did not shelter Koragas in his PM-residence, there was Bhattacharya as his companion ! Now, don't expect me to explain who Ranjan Bhattacharya is.

Therefore, all are equally responsible for mine and your development and Koragas' underdevelopment.

whether it is Modi/ Siddu/ local MLA.... let all work to get the things done for this family....
You will not forget that someone in Karnataka, got the road work done by writing to Modi... One student in Brahmavar wrote to Modi about the problems of NH at Brahamavar bus stop... He too got a good response from PM... So if we write, definitely this family will get some help...

BJP government led by Modi has been returned a cheque of Rs.1,00,00 donated by a retired school teacher .The donors instruction was to find the poorest among poor in India and handover the money to him>
MODI GOVERNMENT RETURNED THE CHEQUE AFTER 6 MONTHS SAYING THAT THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY IN INDIA.

This is how our administration works in India.Funny thing is central Government have a clear record saying that there are 89 multi billionaire and 359 millionaires in India.

    What a pity.....shame on us.

I agree with you Prabhuji,,, but this is the fact ..nobody cares for the poor and underprivileged....Central Government agreed that they could not find the poorest Indian Citizen.
Prabhuji,,, have you seen any advertisement given by the Central Government to find the poorest Indian citizen ?Never but you might seen Central government advertisements favouring Adani projects. Aren't you ?

I wont support any political parties nor I have any political idol.what I am looking for is every citizen of India must have their own identity in records.
I hope and wish Prabhuji also may have same opinion.
