Mangaluru, Aug 18: The Karnataka Prantheeya Saha Sanghachalak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Dr P Vaman Shenoy celebrated Raksha Bandhan on Infant Jesus Shrine premises by tying Rakhi on the director of the shrine Fr Elias D''Souza thus marking Hindu-Christian unity.

The Catholic women present also tied Rakhi on Dr P Vaman Shenoy and city Karyavahak Harikrishna and chanted slogans of Hindu-Christian unity.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Shenoy said, "Raksha Bandhan is a symbol of brotherhood and protection. It was introduced by the Rajputs and is a common event for Hindus. But we have to keep in mind that one who respects India and its traditions is a Hindu. The message of this celebration is unity in the country irrespective of caste and creed."

"The reason for choosing Infant Jesus Shrine is because of the feeling of patriotism and nationalism among the priests and religious heads of the shrine which have enabled them to permit us to celebrate the occasion here and we thank them for this. Being Indians we must work together to face challenges like terrorism irrespective of caste," he explained.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Fr Elias said, "The motive of this celebration of Raksha Bandhan is not limited to any caste or creed or religion. It is a programme which fosters brotherhood. When the leaders of RSS requested us we permitted them so that we could propagate the message of harmony. Since this is the first occurrence in the Church, it will help promote harmony in society. I hope this celebration takes places in all churches."

Assistant director of the shrine Prakash D''Cunha thanked all, while Franklin Monteiro compered the programme.

Fr Prakash D'Cunha welcomed the gathering and delivered the vote of thanks.
