MAKKAH, Dec 5: Police are searching for an unknown driver after he opened fire yesterday at security officers at Akeshiya checkpoint, south of Makkah, and ran away, according to Maj. Abdul Mohsen Al-Maiman, spokesman of the Makkah police.
Al-Maiman said security officers stopped the GMC van when they noticed that it was missing a license plate.
“The driver then opened fire at the officers who were present at the checkpoint and ran away through a desert road,” he added.
He said police were looking for the gunman soon after the incident, using a helicopter in order to monitor the driver’s movement in the desert. He said no police officer was hurt in the gun attack.
A preliminary investigation proved that the driver might be involved in smuggling illegal workers and pilgrims into Makkah. “We are continuing the search for the gunman and we’ll let you know the details later,” Al-Maiman said.
