Mangaluru, Aug 20: The Mysuru zonal chess tournament of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru was held at Father Muller Medical College in city on August 17.

The programme was presided over by Fr Richard Coelho, the administrator of Father Muller Medical College Hospital. Fr Coelho in his speech opined that the game of chess is not merely an idle amusement. “The game has several very valuable qualities of the mind like concentration, patience and alertness. It is useful in the course of human life. It should be played by students.” Fr Coelho said.

Fr Ravi Rudolph D'Sa the administrator of the Medical College honoured the physical directors who had come along with their teams. Ten colleges participated with ten teams of gents and eight teams of ladies. Derik was chess arbiter for the tournament. Dean Dr Jayaprakash Alva and Dharmendra the convener for Mysuru zone were present during the function.

In boys section, A J Institute of Medical Science and Research bagged the first prize while Father Muller Medical College secured runners up place and in girls section, Father Muller Medical College won the first prize while runners up place went to AJ institute of Medical Science and Research. These teams are now qualified to represent the Mysuru zone in the inter-zonal levels.

The trophies were handed over by the chief guest, Dr Manjunath Shetty the professor of urology.

In the concluding programme, Dr Prathvi Shetty the sports convener stressed about such sports activity to be encouraged and students to actively participate. “Chess acts as stress reliever to medical students who strongly pursuit academic activities.” he said.
