Mangaluru, Aug 26: A mother has complained to the police that her daughter ended life because of dowry harassment from her in-laws.

Varija Shetty from Belthangady is the complainant. She lodged the complaint at Moodbidri police station on Friday August 26, which says that her daughter Swathi Shetty (25) consumed poison and died because of the harassment related to dowry.

Swathi from Belthangady had married Bhoja Shetty’s son Sharathchandra from Moodumarnadu in 2014. Sharathchandra had left for gulf for work only after a month of a marriage. Swathi who was a MSW graduate worked in Mangaluru and commuted everyday from Moodumarnadu.

Swathi

On August 13, Swathi had gone to her mother and had complained about harassment. But mother told her to be patient and sent her back to her in-laws’ house. When she phoned on the same day to talk to Swathi, there was no reply. Then she phoned Shashi, the neighbour of Bhoja Shetty. When Shashi went to the house, Swathi was found lying semi unconscious as she had consumed poison. Immediately she was taken to a hospital in Moodbidri and then shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru.

Swathi breathed her last without responding to treatment on August 18. Police recorded it as a suicide case.

Now the case has taken a new turn with Varija complaining about dowry harassment. Her complaint says that the harassment prompted her daughter to take the extreme step.

I know a Shetty family in Mumbai, where a young woman drank poison. No complaint of dowry, but may be she was not able to live with mother-in-law. No complaint on her husband, since he is too good.

However, she survived and the girl's father called son-in-law and told him he would give an apartment and he should live with his daughter there or to sign divorce paper. Boy agreed to the former condition and now they are a very very happy couple.

dear Francis - Again here you are provoking dowry. It is very difficult for middle clss family to buy a flat in Mangalore. For two bed room it costs more than half crore.

before demanding the dowry one should think what is the situation of girls family. After giving so much education and marriage expenses and dowry Its impossible for middle class family.

The dowry system is the biggest menace in India. It puts financial burden on the bride's family. The dowry is considered to be a major contributor towards violence against women in India. It is often seen that the newly married women are so much mentally/physically tortured by their in laws which situation force them to commit suicide. Despite of introducing so many laws against dowry system, unfortunately law breakers are easily get away without punishment due to loopholes. It is amazing that even highly educated girls succumb to the dowry menace. The girl parents are required to encourage their daughters to fight against such social evil.

Instead of making caste census caste system should be abolished. Caste system is the root cause of all evils like these and parents should encourage children to come out of caste system and get married the person of their choice of the same religion.

Such cases to be considered as murders and in laws guilty to be punished .Such qualified persons going to such extreme shows the magnitude of the problem. May her soul rest in peace.

    Dear Stan, Udupi..

I agree with you partly. But, not only the in-laws but also in this case the victim's mother should be held accountable.

When the daughter had come home to complain why did the mother send her back without taking action?

So sad, may the deceased soul rest in peace. Parents pain, my God may God give them strength.
So many dowry deaths are taking place, but whether so called protectors of culture and nationalist parties protesting and taking preventive measures? No!
They will gather and go to prevent where hunger are fed and deceased and sufferers are looked after by missionaries! ENEMIES OF HUMANITY!

Dowry is a curse indeed. Parents of the girls drown in loans in order to meet undisclosed demands made by boys families. In the present times the girls are also brought up with good education and facilities that enable them to stand on their own feet. Swathi had everything .. looks, education and a job. She should have packed her bags and moved out of the house upon lodging a complaint with the police. If her mother had helped her in taking that step, she would have been alive. We only hope Swathi gets justice and her inlaws rot in prison.

Now let in-laws go to jail in their old age, since 2014 to 2016 if he would have not taken her to gulf to live with them then something is wrong. She is an educated girl, suicide is not an ultimate solution to any problem! RIP!

So Bad, So sad. The Term 'dowry harassment on female side ' widely used in the society and accepted easy way. In marriage truth is always someone's interference either from Mother in Law- boy side /girl side. Bad mother in Law can send both couples to unknown world overnight without trace or any evidence.

HERE MOTHER IS ACTUALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR HER DEATH. IF THIS MOTHER HAD COMPASSION ON HER DAUGHTER SHE WOULD HAVE TOLD HER TO STAY IN A RENTED ROOM AND CONTINUE WORKING. SHE HAD A JOB. THEN WHY TO WORRY?NOW CRYING YOUR DAUGHTER WILL NOT COME BACK MOTHER, MOTHERS SHOULD THINK THRICE FOR THE FUTURE OF THEIR DAUGHTER. A GIRL LEAVES EVERYTHING AND ENTERS HUSBANDS HOUSE, FOR WHAT? HARASSMENT, BULL$#IT IN LAWS.

this is well cooked story.. as i know very well Mr.boja shetty n family they treated their daughter in law very well as their own daughter..And about sharathchandra he is very soft spoken person and working in abudhabi. If they harassed for her dowry then why Varija shety not complained to the police before this.

She went to meet her mother and on same day she came back n suicide at her In laws house..something fishy.

When she had complained about harassment what was the need for the Mother to send her back to her in-laws’ house. This is the mistake most of the Parents do as they fear society and what will people comment. Now the society or people have not lost anything but a Mother has lost her daughter.
