Udupi: Hejamady toll gate - Quick passage, advanced technical system & facilities

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (EP)

Udupi, Aug 28: Payment of toll on Hejamady NH66 center is made simple so that a vehicle driver can pay the toll quickly and proceed further. Several facilities such as 14 lanes are provided for the purpose. Seven lanes are meant for arrival and remaining seven lanes are for departure. The toll gate has been made broad to prevent traffic block. “If a person pays the toll with proper change, he can proceed after paying the toll within ten seconds”, say Navyug company officials.

There are security personnel during all the 24 hours in the day to provide security. Medical facilities and Ambulance are available in case of accidents within a radius of 40 kilometres. A pharmacist is also present. A crane facility is available if the vehicles break down.

Automatic doors have installed to save time and for smooth flow of traffic. As the toll is paid, the door opens through sensor and enables the vehicle to pass through. It closes soon after the vehicle passes. 30 modern CC cameras have been installed at the rate of two cameras for each lane and two outside. Toilets have been constructed for drivers and passengers.

Toll can also be paid electronically through ETC. One can obtain ICICI bank FAStag, a sticker like a bar code, fix it to the car and pass through the lane meant for those who have FAStag without stopping the vehicle. The FAStag system works through Radio Frequency Identification. It reads only when the vehicle passes through the specified lane. Therefore there is no need to stop the vehicle at all.

“No toll is collected from two wheelers and auto rikshaws. A separate lane is specified for them. The toll is also less for those who stay within a distance of 20 kilometres”, said the officials.

As the toll gate functions round the clock, the staff are provided accommodation above the toll gate. Well-equipped rooms with necessary facilities are constructed for them. The toll gate in Sasthan also has similar facilities though that toll gate only has ten lanes.

The national highway authority has not permitted collection of toll at Hejmady and Sasthan yet. The officials have said that Surathkal toll gate may stop when Hejamady toll gate starts functioning.

A very important info has missed. These toll gates detect the class and toll of vehicle automatically, that is no corruption can arise among the toll collecting staff.

As it is under free trial now, one can actually see the sudden change in class of vehicle along with its respective toll appear on the display boards as the vehicle goes through any of the 14 lanes!

The erstwhile enjoyed facility, for example visiting from Padubidri to Mulky and back is going to be dragged away from the locals as soon as the toll collection starts. For the purpose of national development these types of (express)high ways are necessary, but the locals should not be made responsible for the counter effects...
There are no completed service roads, some of the service roads are just like a bus bay not even for a furlong of length and some of are the parking stands for Auto, Tempo, Taxi etc...
Crossing of this high way is another difficult unavoidable task for the locals. Cross roads at Korankrapady, Udyavar, Kallapu, Moodabettu, Pangala etc. are closed without any systematic study or alternative arrangements. At Katapady, people have to cross over four roads and this high way succeeded to divide the town as East and West.
For quality highways and its maintenance, payment of toll by the users is also one of the important factor. And considering the number of vehicles passing through this high way, this is a multi-crore business too. If the locals excluded from the payment of toll, there may not be a heavy loss of revenue collection. Rather this is to be considered as a compensation for their inconvenience due to this high way work...
People of 30km distance from the toll gate are to be considered for the free-toll facility. The elected leaders irrespective of representing party, should come forward to support and settle the issue... so that, there may not arise any oppose or protest during the time of formal opening of this Toll Gate...

Some local Mafia is minting money at Surathkal toll gate because all transactions are in cash. Also they are taking different amount of money for monthly passes for the non commercial vehicles residing within 20 Kms of Toll gate. The money looted is spent on gambling and illicit activities.Let it not happen at Hejamadi.

Good. An indication that we are in an era of Electronics. Pay without stopping, electronically get charged as you pass is what makes it trendy. I wish this system is incorporated in all toll gates withing the state.

On the other hand, staff staying at the same structure is too interesting. Hope it does not turn out to be a colony with dirty laundry hung for public view, plants protruding/dangling, TV antennae put up. Milk-man, fish/vegetable vendors bargain and children wanting to play on the very roads above which their parents stay.

If at all the residence is limited just for bachelors, I dread that service providing women aren't a frequent scene. And maintaining cleanliness can be an obvious worry.
